In track athletics you have certain events, most involve running the fastest over various distances.
In swimming you have lots of different strokes swimming various distances.

It seems to me that swimming has decided that getting from A to B as fast as possible is not the point otherwise there would only be front crawl.
Why then has track not evolved to get more medals, by having hopping (breast stroke), 2 footed jumping (butterfly), backwards (back stroke), also the relay of all these above. Seems to me like track has diddled itself out of about 200 potential medals.
I look forward to it evolving and watching the 5000m hop in 2028 olympics.

or should all swimming competitions be limited to just 1 x 50m race 1 x 100m race etc etc fastest wins end off?
For the two-footed jumping, make the athletes put a hessian sack over both legs and I think you have a winner! silly

Perhaps for another discipline, they need to balance an object on an implement as they run. Perhaps an egg and a spoon? wink

I think it would be much more interesting to tie your left leg to his left leg. Now run.

In Jason and the Argonauts, the children of the hydra's teeth emerge from the ground to do battle with Jason, & Co. Just before attacking, they emit a blood curdling scream. But none has an epiglottis or vocal cords so how can they make a noise? Yes, how? How?

They do have hurdles, steeplechase and relay races which follow the theme of "how can we make this race slower and more akward".

The event is track and field, not just track. If one was to count events that take place involving the track - with only one form of outright running allowed you could have running, walking, hurdles, steeplechase, decathlon, heptathlon... .

Possibly with the same magic that allows them to move without muscles and tendons, see without eyes, and think without brains. Probably best not to dwell on it too much. smile

Swimming meets needs to be trimmed down, way too many medal events.

If you're st at the 100m Breaststroke, there's always the chance of a medal in the 100m Crawl, 100m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke.

A potential multimedal situation not mirrored in other sports, it's madness.

A bit like all the different cycling medals aka how many different ways can you cycle round a velodrome.

Similarly with rowing, which I believe is why the uk put so much investment in to cycling and rowing a few years back as there are a lot of medals available.

These adverts that pop up advertising free apps where folks win free money. What's the scam? Get you into betting real money? Money laundering? Putting nasties on your phone? Getting details for other nefarious use? All of the above? Has anyone been daft enough to actual click on one? I have zero intention of doing so.

Except gymnastics: floor, beam, parallel bars, assymetric bars, rings, vault, combined then there's the 'new' disciplines of ball, hoop and ribbon. If you have an exceptional swimmer and an exceptional gymnast in your squad you could be in line for a ton of medals at the major championships and be high up the medals table on the strength of two athletes.

Jason: "excuse me, but you don't seem to be able to exist within the physical rules that..'
Hydra: slices Jason in half
The end.

And boxing. You'd have to be unbelievably good, admittedly, to win at each weight, but nowadays you can also opt for either gender and double up there as well...

There again his Mo'ness did the double at 5000/10000, Bolt did 100/200 and relay, and Carl Lewis added the jump too. But swimming seems to offer more medalware then nearly all others.

Don't forget cycling! That's always good for a medal haul.

UK Sport allocates funding largely based on Olympic (and maybe World Champs?) medal results, so it's in each sport's interest to have as many events as possible.

It's probably the same in all other countries too.

Whoa, gaping continuity error. If the hydra bisects Jason, how can the other bloke have it cremated with fire bolts, get its teeth, plant them and have the resulting emergent' children' attack Jason? He's already dead.

Equally, the skeletal warriors slice/stab some Argonauts with the expected result. However, a skeleton's being run through causes its death - again. Without innards? Yes, I know one is beheaded but it still lacks soft tissues.

But the best part is at the very end.

Swimming definitely dominates the multimedal tables, but shooting, gymnastics and speed skating are up there.

Why are football pitches (as in professional high quality pitches not the local park) mown (mowed rotate??) straight after a match?

Are the machines mowers or aerator type jobbies?

It's all about good grass management. It helps with putting slightly displaced areas of grass - not big enough to be a divot - back into place and stimulates growth.
