Porsche 911 GT1: Pic of the Week

Well, we couldn't just do the one story on Porsche's 70th birthday...

Where on earth do you start in selecting a picture to represent seven decades of Porsche? Answer is you don't, because you'd go completely berserk. Road car, race car, tractor, person, factory, circuit... it would be impossible to choose.

What you do instead is select a cool picture of a Porsche you like. At least that's what we've done with this week's Friday wallpaper, because there couldn't be anything but a Porsche there as the brand celebrates the big 7-0.

Why 911 GT1? Well, why not? So much of the Porsche Le Mans focus is on the outrageous flat-12 917s and the more recent hybrid 919s that the GT1's significance can be overlooked. While not victorious at Le Mans until its final GT1-98 spec seen here (having also competed in original 'GT1' and 'GT1 Evo' guises), much of its legendary status was already assured from 1996 by looking like the 911 of your dreams. And also some of your nightmares - it was a car both threatening yet strangely appealing to look at, which is some trick to pull off.

This picture is from Hockenheim, specifically when Porsche brought all its Le Mans winners (cars and drivers) back together to celebrate the success. And while the GT1 will likely never be the first Le Mans winning Porsche people think of, its wild looks and triumph against faster opposition means it certainly deserves a spot in the limelight. Especially with a livery like this. You never know, with the new regulations coming in, perhaps we'll see more crazy prototype racers that look a bit similar to the road cars; something to look forward to with cars like the GT1 as a precedent.

The 98 GT1 is up there with the Ueno Clinic F1 GTR as my favourite GT car ever.

The roadcar looks astonishing too.

The only mid-engined 911 from Porsche?

Except the current 911 RSR. Don't think they've done a road version of that though!

I think it's great that even when Porsche was completely on its arse before the the Boxster money started to roll in they still decided to fund three generations of GT1 car in consecutive years.

Such a gorgeous machine - if anyone needed a pointer on how aerodynamics works just show them that. It's like a smoke trail from a wind tunnel made solid.
