PH Service History: Swede Matters

Volvo's revealed its new S60 - and it's a bit of alright. But if you can't wait, Scrof's found some lovely old Swedes to tide you over

Once upon a time, the arrival of a new Volvo would be greeted with studied nonchalance by the motoring press and car enthusiasts alike. But of course, that's no longer the case; since the company's great reinvention of the 1990s, it's gone from strength to strength, churning out one handsome design after another. So it was with some anticipation that we looked forward to the first official images of the new S60, which came out earlier this week.

Handsome thing, isn't it? True, it's very much a miniaturised S90, but it's also one that's been toned, tweaked and tautened here and there to make it look, somehow, even better. In fact, I don't know about you, but I can't help but feel that next to the Audi A4, Merc C-Class, BMW 3 Series and even the Jaguar XE, the S60's the one that looks the sharpest of the lot. Roll on the Polestar version, I say.

All of this is great news for fans of Swedish cars. Except for the fact, of course, that it's going to a while before we can find out if the S60's as good to drive as it is to look at - and even longer before the S60 falls to a level of value that makes it accessible to the likes of you and I. Even so, if you're anything like me, the advent of the new car will have put you in mind of old Swedish greats - and fancying a root around in the classifieds to see what's out there right now.

Let's start with a true unicorn - an S80 V8. Yes, really. If you've heard of this supremely rare beast, you'll know it's particularly interesting - and if you haven't, here's why. Volvo offered the second-generation S80 with a thumping 4.4-litre engine - one developed specifically for Volvo by Yamaha, and not shared with any other car, although the block was used in a couple of the bigger Yamaha marine outboard engines. It's a cracking lump: smooth and whisper-quiet at motorway speeds, but happy to rev and release 315hp as it does so. You get four-wheel-drive and adjustable suspension as standard, too, and set to 'Sport' mode the S80 V8 is actually a competent and cohesive steer on a back road, lacking the outright feel of a BMW but still rather enjoyable in its own way. This one isn't cheap, but these things are so rare that it's hard to decide how much they're actually worth - to the right person, I could see it fetching that sort of money, especially with the full history and low mileage. A tempting old barge, especially if you're looking for an interesting alternative to a 5 Series, and ideal to wait out the arrival of the S60.

That's all good and well if you want a motorway wafter, but what about something a little more thrusting? Enter the V70 R. Quicker and tauter than the S80, the V70 R is all that's good about Volvo: an estate with room for no end of rubbish in the back, but with a turbocharged powerplant up front capable of delivering thumping power. Perfect. This one doesn't come with the fantastic tan leather interior or the Flash Green paintwork so readily associated with the second-gen model, but its discreet grey-over-black does at least mean it flies under the radar - so nobody will see you coming. At a fiver less than five grand, this feels like an awful lot of car for the money; the seller needs it gone quickly, too, so a bargain is there for the striking. One thing, though: as it's a Japanese import, it's worth checking it has adequate rust protection on the underside, and if it hasn't, budgeting to smear some on.

But do we have to stick to just Volvos? Well, it's my column, so I've just decided that 'no' is the answer. Let's have some Saabs, then, and the first one that caught my eye is this delightful 900 T16S Aero. It dates from 1991, comes with a tonne of history, and doesn't it just look the bee's knees in two-tone red over grey? And at £7,995 - believe it or not - it's cheap for a 900 Turbo right now. Although there is a reason for that: it's done 178,000 miles. Ouch. Still, as Saab enthusiast will know, this is barely a smattering if the car's been looked after well, and if you need evidence of that just take a look at the driver's seat. I've seen driver's seats in worse condition than that in 30,000-mile family hatchbacks, for goodness sake. Of course, as with any 900 Turbo, it should be joyously boosty to drive, and you'll fall in love with it every time you catch sight of yourself in a shop window.

But even better value, in my book, is this rather handsome old 9-5 Aero. It's a facelift model with the 250hp engine, comes in a cracking colour scheme, and has a remarkably low mileage and a full service history. Sounds like it's been owned by an enthusiast, too, which is always a good thing - and they've recently done some useful bits of maintenance to keep the car up to speed. These old Aeros are quick enough in a straight line that they're still very entertaining things to drive, and while a touch unruly in the corners, their forte is big-mile cruising, at which they're adept. They're looking better and better with age, too - in fact, if there's one car here that feels like a spiritual predecessor to the new S60 in terms of its size, its sharp looks and its turbocharged power, I'd say it's this one. In fact, why bother waiting for the new car at all, when this 9-5 hits all the same notes for a fraction of the price?

The 4.4 V8 was also used in the XC90 and a modified version by Noble in the M600, shame on PH for stating it was only used in the s80.

The new s60 looks cracking in the rendered pictures, prime candidate for my next lease I reckon. Hope the interior is also similar to that of the s90.

I saw this article and the pictures and had a bit of a twilight zone moment thinking, "I'm sure I saw one of these on the road the other day". Convinced that was the case, but knowing it couldn't be as they have only just released the images I went on ebay, put in Volvo and sorted by highest first and after not much scrolling found the S90. Mystery solved.

Those rear lights and particularly the shape of them are what stuck in my memory on the car I saw. That's what made me think I had seen this on the road, that and the fact it's also a saloon. Cool starry bra. Just shows how out of touch I am with elements of Volvo's "design language".

I love that 9-5 Aero, it's the pre-facelift which introduced the rather ugly 'Dame Edna' headlights. I used to have the 2.3 LPT (Low pressure turbo) - same lump as this but smaller turbo and less BHP - 185 - gorgeous car, but I sometimes felt I was solely responsible for keeping Saab UK's parts business going - no end of silly electrical faults - airbags needed replacing, drive shafts, electronic gizmos etc.Bit of a money pit, though I am still sorely tempted.....

Shame GM allowed the brand to die - a quirky slightly left-field choice. I had 3 of them!

That Volvo S80 V8 has almost acceptable fuel consumption - 27mpg - not quite as ruinously thirsty as I imagined. That Yamaha V8 lump is supposed to be an excellent motor. I see someone's already snapped it up.

I really liked my 9-5 too and there is a whole world of tuning opportunities for those who like to tinker. I can't remember there being a single period where everything on the car worked at the same time though which didn't necessary bother me back then but I don't think that I would put up with it now.

Our old 9-5 was an excellent car. Great engine, wonderful seats. Suspect wood trim.

I still shout “hello possums” every time I see a facelift.

It's a shame it all went tits up as it did. I think last generation 9-5 still looks good today, especially this Hirsch version.

Reading this advert brings back a load of memories of researching what I could do to my 9-5.

Wow - I was just about to make some comment about torque-steering his way through a set of front tyres every 3,000 miles, then I saw the bit about the Quaife LSD - That is a seriously well-specced car.

If it was an estate, I'd be seriously considering liberating a few grand from my ever-dwindling pension fund. That's a gorgeous bit of kit. Bit of a sleeper as well.

I think you’re right. The last ones were very handsome cars and I’ve always liked Saabs. I needed cheap transport to get me to and from the train station so I bought a 9-5 Vector 2 years ago. It’s only done 80k miles but I’ve spent a fortune on it keeping it in good health. Now the EML has come on so I suspect more money is required. It’s a great car though. Looks a bit sheddy but stylish and so comfortable and it has a tape player so it’s cool. I drive it far more often than I should but I like it.

Didn't the Volvo 4.4 V8 end up in the Noble M600 too?

I've had a 95 Aero for a few years now and they are stonking performance for the money if you can find a good one and very tuneable. Mine is an auto and because of the box felt quite sluggish ( manuals feel much more rapid) & compared to the rapid manual Abbot Racing fettled Saab 9000 aero it replaced. So...I got Abbott Racing to fettle the 95 aero and not much needed to be done to get me smiling. The original suspension and brakes were a bit underwhelming and I got Abbotts to sort that too. 100K miles later It's got 170K on the clock and still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I've no complaints re the handling but that is due to Abbotts tuning it. Unlike earlier Saabs I owned there is no torque steer at all. NONE! but tyre choice is important. The 9000 aero I had was a trully lovely car and bloody brisk too. I had a 1989 900T16s before that which I just loved. I'd say it was the best car I ever owned. One hot summer day at 40 degreesC I drove it to Bordeaux at 125mph all the way from Calais and it liked it! Ergonomics have been mentioned on this thread already and it was perfect in that regard, not least due to the very expensive curved windscreen!. It was fast for me back in the day I owned it but not compared to the more recent models ...on the other hand, set up well these really handle due to the double wishbone front suspension and they are a joy to drive. I sold my 900 turbo on Ebay about 10 years ago for £400 with no fourth gear but driveable. I wish I'd kept it! I guess it would cost £7K now to buy it back ,original color coded Momo steering wheel and all! I don't know much about Volvos but I would certainly consider one because Saab certainly made me respect Swedish engineering and design

That's mine. It's very capable for a 9-5. The guy in the V6T S4 certainly found that out Saturday morning on the way back from Grimesthorpe after picking up bro's Boxster wink

Agree estates seem to be more desirable but the boot is very big on these. Re the torque steer it really isn't bad on the 9-5 compared to the GM 900/OG 9-3 (I know i've had those too). I'm only selling because I want a new project but if i end up keeping it then great, it's a unique example and gets many comments.

This is my first summer of wafting around in my Mk 1 C70 convertible and it's been great.

About time Volvo released another convertible that isn't a derv. If they do a soft top version of the above then I could be very interested.

That new S60 does look good. I thought the first one looked good (my dad had one), I didn't really like the second one at all.

I would love an S80 V8 for that unassuming factor though!

Point to note: unless that 900 has had a change of dash, it's not the full beans, intercooled 175BHP turbo but the low-pressure, 145BHP one. No pic of the engine to check, however.

Boost gauge (or lack of) above the fuel / temp gauges is the giveaway.

Dealer hasn't researched it enough, likewise PH. It's not hard to upgrade, and may have been done but, as I said, there's no engine shot to prove either way.

Love my 2004 9-5 estate I have at the moment. I'm surprised by peoples niggles here as mine have really had none, apart from blocked AC drains.

Its on 132k and still running like a dream, for anyone with an economy mind I just drove 250 miles and cruised at 60, it reckons it'll get 700 out of a tank at that speed, nice.

Loved my 9-5 especially after it spent a few expensive days at Abbott racing. As someone else commented there was never a single moment when 100 % of the car was working perfectly _ but what the hell..

Think that Scottish Saab is sitting on non standard springs/suspension ??
