Bush may have been stupid, said and done stupid things but I never doubted that he believed he was doing the best for his country.

It's the same for John MacCain, he said and did things I didn't like but he was dedicated to his country and its betterment

Trump is a different kettle of fish, for him it is Trump first and everything else second, everything he does he does for his own glorification.

a whole list of Bushisms like "they misunderestimated me", "There's no French word for Entrepreneur" or "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning".
Tangent: that was genuinely fake news. A satirical joke by Shirley Williams that got a life of its own. "Mission accomplished", for me, counts as the #1 Bushism.

As for Bush/Trump comparisons, I've said in previous volumes of this thread that Trump has done relatively little harm (meaning death/suffering caused to others) than most US Presidents. For that, at least, the rest of the world can be a little thankful.

But, the lower body count will not be what makes Trump's presidency so remarkable.

Bush's reaction on 9/11 can't be judged without knowing what was whispered into his ear, do we know that?

Context is everything though.

Would Bush, when shown a written statement about a dead senator, refuse to release it and instead post a photo of himself on instagram sending best wishes to the family?
This is the point I was (obviously poorly) trying to make. Of course other Presidents weren't all perfect, but on the specific matter of paying respect to someone deserving of respect, I doubt there would be many who would have made such a gigantic Horlicks of it as Trump has. Especially as he seems to done it quite deliberately. That's an extra layer of overt nastiness on top of his proven stupidity. I'm only in my sixties so can't speak for all Presidents through history but there have been none in my lifetime who have openly displayed such a poisonous mix of aggressive pettiness as this one.

9/11 was a global response, Blair was just as desperate to go to war and no doubt supported and encouraged Bush Jr’s immediate reaction. .John Kampfner’s excellent book “Blair’s Wars” is a good read. Comparing a personal response (Trump) to one which was fashioned by multiple world leaders is laughable.

Indeed. It would be hard to find anyone else who so clearly demonstrates so many of the worst characteristics it is possible to have as a human.

He's like a cartoon of stiness.

Thanks, hadn't seen that before, I can't really see what difference it would have made if Bush had got to his feet a few minutes before he did, as for what the Donald's reaction would be in the same circumstances, the mind boggles

Syria squirrel inbound. Going to be interesting this one as this is an area where Trump's deep state and fake news rhetoric has grounding in fact.

Idlib province in northern Syria is now the largest concentration of jihadis on earth, an area packed with Al-Qaeda and worse, for a run down check the belligerents section on this wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idlib_Governorate_cl...

As Syrian forces gather to retake this sullied part of their country DoD spokesman Eric Pahon said “We remain gravely concerned over potential reports of a military offensive by the Syrian regime against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Idlib, which would result in devastating humanitarian consequences,” source

Aww those cuddly civilian al-qaeda types.

Interestingly that was about all a search for 'idlib america announcement' in the last week turned up, nothing on any of the main USA sources and the odd bleeding heart article from British press that makes no mention of Al-Quaeda. However a search in the same time range for russia chemical attack syria brings up a plethora of articles showing that Russia expects a false flag chemical attack by jihadis in order to provoke a response from America. Russia aren't messing about on this one and have recently brough in extra missile cruisers and other assets, easily enough to take a wave of tomahawks out the sky but more to the point, enough to retaliate if Russian forces are hit.

Trump has never been one to fall for the lie about 'moderate rebels' so if a chemical attack happens I can not think of an easier to prove or greater sin for the 'deep state' and 'fake news' to perpetrate than manipulating the American people and military in to supporting Al-Qaeda, the very people who attacked the twin towers and, who we were told, were worth invading Afghanistan for.

This. This is the swamp, the actual real swamp, the putrid gathering of scum where the acetous smell of munitions and crisping bacon is only remembered later because right now you can't get away from the screaming as you watch flesh soughing away to reveal the still agonising bones of your loved ones.

I wrote that as a reminder that for all Trumps sins none of them compare to the Wolfowitz doctrine which, wittingly or otherwise, Trump has done more than anyone to bring to a close. If a chemical attack happens as the SAA move to retake Idlib, and that's not a given, it will be the perfect time to make a move against the real swamp, should he be competent enough to do so, and that also is not a given.

Now that we know that Manafort tried to grip a couple of weeks ago, and is still trying, does trump retract his praise for him,as he thought he wasn't flipping?

Trumps doubled down on his claim the world will be worse without him, telling Christian leaders there'll be violence if he loses the midterms.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna904471

"You're one election away from losing everything that you've got," and said their opponents were "violent people" who would overturn these gains "violently."

BREAKING: Gov. Ricardo Rossello raises Puerto Rico's official toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975 following new study.

This is where trump went to, tossing out paper towels and in October 2017, Trump said that Puerto Rico officials should be "proud" more haven't died like in "a real catastrophe like Katrina.

First and foremost it means he doesn't understand how the internet works - seeing as he doesn't normally use it I think this is a given. So he'll just be parroting some story he's seen on Fox. Second it means he doesn't know how the First Amendment works. And thirdly it means he'll be promised an investigation amid much eye rolling and it'll be quickly kicked into the long grass.

There's a good chance though this will be (one of) his next squirrels deployed and further whipped up by Fox etc to distract from his misdeeds and those of his accomplices.
Part of me wonders whether someone has clever engineered this? Although early hours Twitter ranting is (depressingly) nothing new for Trump, this feels more calculated, in the sense that it was clearly going to be picked up by sensitive media, who would amplify it further to the point it changed the news cycle. This is all going on whilst we're hearing about Manafort trying to secure a plea deal, so maybe it was an effort of divert from that? May only be very short term, but it just feels a bit too artificial. The alternative is he's paranoid enough to genuinely search for Google for news about himself in the early hours of the morning, which if anything is more disturbing, especially when you consider how it further reinforces the "fake news" mantra amongst his core support.

Have we had the reports of his supporters hounding non-white people and asking a Navajo legislator if he's in the country legally?
