The question is in the title. I can't really get a clear answer hence im asking here before I get an instand M.O.T fail.
My current setup is a muffler delete with a fake muffler casing around the straight pipe but I was thinking to get the resonator deleted as well. Would the fake muffler trick the M.O.T garage as to thinking i have a muffler and not a straight pipe?

I have a 2014 fiesta ST

It could fail for being too loud.

Oh right, But say if it wAS quite would it fail for having the rear muffler and resonator changed into a straight pipe?

8.1 Noise

8.1.1 Noise suppression system

You must inspect:
  • exhaust silencers
  • under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment – you don't need to inspect this for Class 3 vehicles
You must use your judgement to assess exhaust noise:

during the emissions test for the vehicle rev the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test

Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you'd expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

Defect Category
Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted Major

As above it could be failed for being excessively loud, but that's dependent on the tester & their opinion at the time.

However, If what you've posted is correct you're NOT going to have a quiet exhaust system OP. You're essentially going to be running an exhaust with no silencing in it whatsoever, if you've already deleted the rear silencer and are now planning to remove the only remaining resonator / silencer from the centre section too.

An un-silenced system on an ST of that era is going to sound ridiculous, IMO, especially if it's also fitted with a remap designed specifically to fake pop, bang & fart on overrun*

  • Not necessarily what OP will be doing and is purely a summing up of some of the similar modified era ST's on the road around my way.
Edit - before it get grief for being anti exhaust / anti noise, this is being posted by someone who has always had some form of aftermarket exhaust on nearly every car i've owned - albeit not anti-socially loud. The only exception being the WRC spec system built to suit my big bhp Mk1 Focus RS back in the mid '00's - on track it probably sounded great, but nowadays i'd class that as embarrassing to drive on the road tbh and if it ever goes road legal again it would need an extra silencer to not make me look like a total arse driving it*

  • Although some would probably say i'd still look like a arse driving it anyway laughgetmecoat

Why? It's not a great sounding engine. Unless you are an adult still living at your parents house.

The fake silencer might trick the tester into thinking its broken rather than missing. That would be a more obvious point.

Not having silencers is not the problem (like a catalytic converter or DPF), it is the noise it makes without that might be the problem.

I wouldn't bother.

What exhaust are you running exactly? Sounds to me like you're running some sort of weird fake back box bolted onto the standard system running the standard resonator...??

I see a lot of this.

"Badge delete"

etc. etc.

It's nonsensical, as you remove something from a physical object, you don't (can't!) 'delete' it.

Sigh.

For the tick-box option list for a brand new car, then "delete" makes sense - you're deciding whether to remove it from the standard spec, whether it be badge or ashtray or sunroof or whatever, and it'll simply never be fitted on the line.

For an aftermarket mod, then you're absolutely right.

I've decided this term needs wider usage. I took my dog to be castrated recently. Or as I have rebranded it: "testicle delete".

OP, you've probably done this the wrong way round.

If you're looking for more noise from your exhaust, removing the resonator is a cheap/easy way to get it.

Removing the silencer and the resonator is effectivley a straight-pipe exhaust - very loud!

I had the resonator removed on my last car, never had any problems with passing MOT's

^^^ This entirely. Isn't resonator another Americanism? I've always known it as a centre box.

Seems like fiestas are becoming the new new chav chariot of choice.

It already sounds great with the muffler delete when underload but idling is to quite, I want it to wake up the neighbours with the press of the start button. I was thinking if I had the resonator deleted I could unleash the beast!
