Lamborghini engined F1 car returns

Sure, it's best result in 1992 was 11th - but would you just listen to it?

Lamborghini's foray into Formula 1 was not one of its most successful motorsport endeavours. As an engine supplier to Larousse and Lotus, its best finish was third, but from then on it got worse. On its own in 1991, Lamborghini could manage no better than seventh. Then back as an engine supplier for both Minardi and Larousse, sixth was the highest points finish before Lamborghini exited stage left at the end of 1993.

Funny how kind time can be though, isn't it? Because here we are, 26 years after this Minardi 191B could do no better than 11th in the Spanish GP, fervently excited about its Polo Storico restoration. Yup, seemingly fed up with road cars as ordinary as the Miura SVJ, Lamborghini's official restoration department has turned its attention to motorsport for the first time. Over the past seven months, Polo Storico has been bringing back chassis #003 to its former glory ahead of competing in classic F1 races.

And why the excitement? The engine, of course. The 3.5-litre 'LE3512' V12 made 690hp - so less than any Aventador ever made - and seemingly revs into eternity, as you can hear in the video. The noise is the kind malevolently melodic howl that only serves to make the current cars sound even more contrived, and makes you forget all about a fairly unremarkable race history.

Having been stored in the Lambo museum for a long time, many of the original components for the Minardi could be restored rather than replaced. Encouragingly, it completed 20 laps in testing without fault, too, so should be fighting fit for whatever competition is lined up for future. Giancarlo Minardi was watching on, suggesting that the V12 noise "still brings back those wonderful times" of manual transmissions and no telemetry. It's hard to disagree...

As my name suggests, this is a special car for me. Beautiful, charismatic and noisy, if ultimately a bit slow. Christian Fittipaldi scored a 6th in Japan with it though the M192, Phillippe Alliot scored 5th in a 1993 Larrousse-Lambo and the final F1 point for Lamborghini was Comas with 6th in Italy 1993 - so it wasn't as pointless as the article suggests.

Also Senna and Hakkinen tested the Lambo V12 in a McLaren chassis in 1993 and were impressed enough for it to be an option for the team, before Peugeot (who ironically had been lining up with Larrousse) joined the party.

Does anyone ever fact check or proof read on this site?

Early Aventadors made 690bhp.

Formula One sorely misses teams like Minardi.

How nice it is to see this machine in action again! The V12 is just glorious. I'd trade the cold speed and efficiency of the current F1 cars for a bit more drama. Who cares about efficiency!

Hearing engines like this echoing around the streets of Monaco are one of my abiding F1 memories.

HP vs BHP - Aventador 700 HP i believe (LP-700)

Oof that noise.. beguiling, emotional, gets the heart going. Basically everything that modern F1 is not with the muted, artificially 'enhanced' acoustics of today's cars.

The engine was also used in the Lotus 102 - with very little success.

Absolutely beautiful. How F1 one longs for a return to a formula similar to this.

Suggest everyone goes to the Silverstone Classic this weekend. They have Masters Historic F1 cars from 1966-1985, Masters Endurance cars from 1995-2012 and plenty of other categories including GTs and Sports Cars. It's an open paddock so anyone get up close and enjoy the noise and smells!

Sounds a bit sick or rev limited. If the latter to preserve the engine or save on rebuilds then shame on them.

That really does sound fantastic, makes the current F1 cars sound like computer generated sound effects.

You’re not wrong. The LP700-4 produced 700ps or 690bhp. So, technically, gameface is right in that article is incorrect by stating that the F1car @690hp puts out “less than any Aventador ever made”.

Given how marginal we’re talking though (you could argue the LP700 actually produces 690.4bhp and therefore the article is correct wink) a casual observer might argue the actual point of the post was “I’ve got a Lamborghini” scratchchin

Taking his hand off the wheel to change gears. Proper.
