Ford Mustang: Pic of the Week
Time to celebrate 10 million Mustangs the best way we know how...
When it comes to the cars that have best defined the American auto industry, Ford has the contest wrapped up. See Model T, Mustang, F-150. Others come close, the likes of the Corvette, Eldorado and Jeep would definitely have their own individual claims to stake but, whether they're your favourites or not, or even objectively the best that the United States has produced or not, the Fords have engrained themselves in both public consciousness and popular culture like no others.
And the Mustang is undoubtedly the most iconic of the three. As both a car of the people and an aspirational status symbol it embodies the American Dream like few other machines possibly could. It has been in production since 1964 (and a half, of course), spawning the entire 'Pony Car' genre in the process and, with Ford recently hitting the milestone of its 10,000,000th example, it's safe to say it's been doing alright.
To celebrate, this week's new desktop wallpaper shows off the Mustang doing what a Mustang does best. Sure, models like the previous-gen Boss 302 and current GT350 have shown that the Mustang can handle, but much of the charm for the past half a century has been in maximum bang for your buck - appeal that lasts to this day. And let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy a big smoky burnout?
I remember sending the link round to a couple of mates, because this page seemed so over the top for an OEM
I mean: we all know that one does burnouts (at least, if you're aged 16 to 24), but we also know that burnouts are illegal in most jurisdictions
yet... there they were... a symphony of smokey shots and grinning faces (and no legal mumbo jumbo in mouse type, either)
this was a notable contrast to the arrival, a couple years later, of Mustang in Australia
there, Ford decided on its own to disable the line lock feature (which, as you know, automates and simplifies the burnout process) after being counseled by local management that the nanny state would take a dim view of Ford Motor Company if the feature should be included in the Aussie product
this was of course reported on Australian enthusiast sites; the responses posted by crabby readers included the predictable eye rolling along with generous helpings of sarcasm and Aussie humour
Also, does anyone actually do this (except journalists who I assume don't pay for tyres)?
