Underappreciated films
Discussion
I would consider Waterworld in this category.
It is not the best film I realise that but the critics went to town on it before its release so it basically bombed at the cinema. I didn't watch it for years because it was supposed to be a pile of you know what and yet I actually quite liked it.
I would also include The Quick and the Dead.

Based on what a few of you have said, and positive IMBD ratings I've ordered a copy of this off the bay. If anyone hasn't seen Arlington Road which I mentioned, I have just also ordered on ebay an upgrade to Blu Ray, so if anyone's interested in a free DVD copy PM me and I'll drop it in the post. Yep me too. And I've just realised that's two Costner films I've suggested which is worrying! It is not the best film I realise that but the critics went to town on it before its release so it basically bombed at the cinema. I’d agree with this, it’s excellent but most people haven’t heard of it.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coherence_(film)
I like this one, great for a low budget flick.
Paddy Considine is superb and should of gone on to do more rather than the bit parts he gets.
Gary Stretch ex boxer, did he ever do any other films?
City Heat, Burt and Clint together at last!!

interestingly enough there is one film that at release was massively under-appreciated but, thanks to age and VCR, is now recognised as a stone cold classic - The Shawshank Redemption
It's A WOnderful Life was another failure at the box office, and then had a second lifeDefinitely agree with Apocalypto, suffered from the Mel Gibson stigma despite the fact that he is a decent director.
Also agree with The Last Jedi, which although flabby in a few places is a brilliant film, Star Wars for grown ups. I inadvertently watched it almost back to back with Revenge of the Sith the other day, the older film was almost unwatchable by comparison.
Dazed and Confused didn't have a Region 2 dvd release iirc which prevented it from being more widely appreciated over here.
I'd also nominate The Thin Red Line which is a deeper more interesting film imo than Saving Private Ryan, which came out at the same time.

Yeah, I'm amazed people think TLJ was good. It was complete rubbish from start to end. Rewatched it at home as its on Sky cinema to see if it was better as an at home movie instead of a cinema movie, and if anything it was worse on second viewing.
The plots rubbish, acting is questionable, and it sticks two fingers up at the canon/lore of the SW universe in order to sell merch.
Strokes for folks and all that.. but I think it's over appreciated rather than under.

I thought it was alright. It had space battles, daft heroics, crap jokes and mystical sword fighting stuff – everything I expect from a Star Wars movie in other words. The plots rubbish, acting is questionable, and it sticks two fingers up at the canon/lore of the SW universe in order to sell merch.

It's not up there in a my list of greatest films, but it provided good entertainment for a couple of hours

I had the opposite experience I enjoyed it more on the second viewing. This sticking two fingers up to the canon is one of my absolute favourite things about the film, I literally have not idea where they're going with all this. The plots rubbish, acting is questionable, and it sticks two fingers up at the canon/lore of the SW universe in order to sell merch.

Rogue One is still my favourite though due to the subject material, although I don't think it's underappreciated.
