£100K Garage: Alex Gould

What would a £100K Garage comprised solely of British cars and bikes look like? Let Alex show you...

Name: Alex Gould
Previously owned: MG ZS 120+, MG ZS 180, Mazda RX-8, Volvo S40, Saab 9-3 Aero, Rover 214 Cabriolet
Currently owned: Honda Civic Type S, Jaguar S-Type R

TVR Cerbera
Price:
£17,000
Balance: £83,000
Why I chose it: "Why would you not want a Blackpool rocket hiding in the garage? As with so many TVRs a great interior/exterior colour combo makes it stand out and there's sufficient V8 oomph to make things be very close very quick. Nothing stirs the soul quite like a TVR, whether it's on tickover or disappearing into the distance sounding like Thor stubbing his toe."

Jaguar F-Type R
Price:
£39,950
Balance: £43,050
Why I chose it: "I mean, just look at it!

"Nothing could sum up having an amazing life like driving this down a country road on a sunny day with the roof down, the sun shining and the birds singing. Not that you will hear the birds, of course, because of the constant popping and banging of the exhaust and whine of the supercharger; and you won't notice the weather as you will be grinning too hard to notice anything beyond the next 200 metres..."

MG ZS 180
Price:
£3,995
Balance: £39,055
Why I chose it: "I may have a problem; I am willing to consult a medical professional about this, but I cannot stop wanting to buy every MG ZS I see. I still believe they have one of the finest FWD chassis you can buy and this, along with the availability of parts and cheap costs, makes them very appealing. I have owned two and this is only because my wife won't allow me to buy any more.  The first one (Toby) blew his head gasket - twice - but I forgave him. My second one (Zeus) destroyed his clutch one day taking the gearbox with it - I also forgave him. This one I think I shall call General Custer(d)."

Range Rover Sport
Price:
£18,890
Balance: £20,165
Why I chose it: "At some point the family may want to go somewhere together, and for this I don't think there is a better way to cruise around than surrounded by leather, gadgets, and with a silky smooth automatic gearbox.  Plenty of space for things in the boot and gadgets to play with when inevitably stuck trying to get out of the shopping centre/family friendly park of choice."

Triumph Daytona 675R
Price:
£6,750
Balance: £13,415
Why I chose it: "I can't actually do anything with this as I don't have a licence, but this minor red tape issue doesn't stop me wanting a bike. I have for years also been dead set on my first bike being a Triumph Daytona, so what better place to buy my first bike than in this fantasy? Handily the monumental telling off from my wife and impracticality of owning such a bike are just as imaginary..."

Mini Cooper
Price:
£11,995
Balance: £1,420
Why I chose it: "What an absolute classic; I've never owned one but I've always wanted to and this one looks to be in brilliant condition. Probably along with the E-Type the most iconic British car known around the world, and one that I would love to have as my daily driver."

"The spare £1,420 will then be used for a slight down payment towards the huge cost of insurance that will be coming my way."

I'm guessing it'll look like a junk yard with broken bits of car and bike strewn everywhere and oil spills all over the floor...

Well, I know what you mean, but if the F Type and the Range Rover and the bike are considered to be the actual main garage, with the others as classics for occasional use, then it does start to make sense. That's the sort of combination I think makes sense for this feature, somewhat interesting daily drivers with a couple of interesting older cars for the weekend and so on.

Apart from my 4 wheeled toys, I have 7 x two-wheeled toys too.... a Triumph 675 Daytona race-bike being one of them. Only bit of advice I can give you........ hurry up and get your license, as you are missing out on a whole other world of serious fun! wink

That's my bike!

To counter the usual 'British build quality' cliches, the Daytona has been 100% fault-free during my ownership, and I'm not just saying that to sell it laugh

Get your license sorted though OP, you won't regret it!

Very enjoyable read. We’re all allowed a guilty pleasure or two, MG or otherwise. I’m continually drawn to having a Trabant by way of comparison!

Owned a couple of ZS180’s and whilst the 2.5 sounded good (and went ok-ish) and the handling was really quite good, the build quality was dire. Worse than fire infact.
One of mine had been supplied New (and I had the paperwork to prove) with 3 wheels of equal diameter and width. And the other wheel with a totally different sized tyre...
Love TVRs but the Cerberus interior makes me think of all the things that are bad when mentioned by pub-bores, the exposed screw heads, the trim between the back seats that just doesn’t seem to have been cut to size properly etc
The LR Sport? Oof, good luck with that, just one look at JD Power surveys would warn me off (coughs embarrassingly as I own a Range Rover that is monumentally ste!). Infact i’d just go with a Disco, the same thing underneath but invariably cheaper and less prone to drug-dealer bling...

Yes, it is back.

" The first one (Toby) blew his head gasket - twice - but I forgave him. My second one (Zeus) destroyed his clutch one day taking the gearbox with it - I also forgave him. This one I think I shall call General Custer(d)." Brilliant.

Nice choices and especially the Triumph.

Get used to it. These will be the only cars anyone will be able to afford to buy in April...
