Morning All,

Approaching my 3rd year of ownership and other than the costs to get everything back up to scratch in year 1, the latest costs have been service items only.

Saw this during my browsing - Led Zeppelin d2 S8 at Bonhams:

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/26109/lot/72/

Always thought it was a rock stars car haha

Funny isn't it the doom and gloom pitched on the internet of "it'll ruin your wallet, it'll be constantly broke, the gearbox WILL break etc."

At this point your well less than a A4, C class, 3 series lease money in to this including everything and instead of not having a car at the end of it you have an audi S8. I think a this point should the gearbox let go its earned the right to be fixed. Really superb motor.

Thank you and yes I’m at around £6k (including buying the car and starting year 3 in 3 months.

I think the car is worth over £6k now so does that make it free motoring?

My c250d Merc was £9k over 2 years (£3k deposit and £300 a month) and handed back in return for a letter...

Bet yours has more MOTs than the Led Z one (the MOT history has quite a few gaps!)

By that time, in could be more accurately described as a Country & Western singer's car laugh

Just given the old girl a clean and made sure she still starts after several weeks of sitting still - all good :-).

Stumbled across this on Instagram with 4 Star Classics - very nice!

Fastgerman my commute has gone down to 500m's to work. I need you to hold my hand in a few months for advice etc/pick your brains.

I've always wanted one of these and now the mpg is no issue.

I think Adrian E and the a8 Parts Forum are far better sources of information, however if you have any queries I’ll try my best :-).

In my opinion (with all fast German cars...), fit OEM parts only and you can’t go wrong. Look for cars with full dealership or specialist history and check that what the service schedule says should be done, is done.

Yep, it's a great forum and all owners/prospective owners should join smile Past owners like me are still welcome!

Can't say I'm a font of all knowledge on these, as I was never one for doing major mechanical work myself, but was always keen to have my S8 in tip-top mechanical condition. Having said that, the gent who bought mine wasn't happy with the brake performance, but to me it'd never felt 'wrong'. I know he ended up replacing some calipers as a result.

My knowledge is now a little out of date, given mine went circa 3 years ago, but will always chip in with advice where I think it's still valid smile

Very nice!

I’m parked up with a solar panel maintaining the battery. I think it’s designed for boats but doing a good job haha.

The 4 Star Classics car is on eBay at £16k, must be the highest price seen since around 2010. Another early car on at £9,995, which I’ve seen advertised for a while.

There is a theory that a number of dealers have increased prices on their cars, so that they can claim to have a discount post-Covid.

That's a good time period, any pics / stories / suggestions when approaching 20 years old?

They are definitely getting to that age where it is 'buy on condition and not mileage' but the UK is obsessed with mileage more than most countries.

I've decided not to service the gearbox having spoken to an Audi Guildford service tech that I trust along with a BMW tech that I went to school with. I've been told stories of owners having the box serviced at Audi and BMW (X5) when relatively new and then reporting squeaking issues to total failure. I've also read stories of people achieving nearly 200k miles without the box serviced. Then I have read reviews on 'proper rebuilds' at £2.5 - £3k and have just decided I will hold that as a slush fund. That money is equivalent to:

Audi RS6 turbo refurb (1 of 2)
BMW M3 vanos refurb
Mercedes E55 AMG supercharger refurb
Porsche 997 S front suspension replacement

So, I don't think it's that bad when a 997 engine rebuild at Hartech is £10k or a modern DCT / DSG is £5k or an RS6 with DRC replacement is £4k.

I’ve basically just serviced the car twice a year (DIY) and put brakes on it.

I’ve found for some reason I need ‘proper’ Audi dealer pads and discs... nothing else seems to last or be as good.

I also have full VCDS for any annoying things that crop up.

I’ve also done 4 gearbox oil changes during my ownership - car is on 90k miles now.

A bit over kill probably - but so is 2 services a year.

But, having spent over £8k on RS6 gearbox rebuilds, I figure it’s best to be careful.

Next on my list is the rear suspension, getting a bit creaky now - hoping it's just the bushes etc as the rear struts seems to be stupidly priced for such a older basic unit (OE Audi)

Nice list there, I’m sure I’d change my mind on gearbox servicing if there was any hesitation etc but it’s currently smoother than my 2015 S4.

Understand the RS6 has the same gearbox but it has 80 bhp more and 100+ torque which must make a difference. Also the way the 2 cars are driven :-)
