The Vault at the Petersen Museum: PH Meets

An exclusive look downstairs at the Petersen Museum - it's quite some collection

Last Friday's Pic of the Week should have proffered some idea of the calibre of car in The Vault at the Petersen Museum: having any De Tomaso Pantera in a collection would be notable, but the Petersen's is not just any old Pantera; it was once Elvis Presley's Pantera. The one he shot. More than once.

It's a running theme throughout the underground section of the Petersen Museum, which is celebrating its 25th year next year. Any Jaguar XKSS would be incredible; the car here is Steve McQueen's old one. His Hudson Hawk is in there, too. The Rolls-Royce Phantom owned by Fred Astaire has its place, as does Preston Tucker's own Tucker Torpedo. There's the 1939 Bugatti 57C once the property of the Shah of Iran, sold for $275 when the revolution came in 1979. There are cars owned by owned by Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne and more.

But if you care more for the cars than the people who own them, The Vault has stuff for you as well. Arguably the collection's signature car is the Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 aero coupe from 1925; bodied by Jonckheere and known as the 'Round Door Rolls' (for obvious reasons), it's been part of the collection since 2001. And in case you're wondering, it looks even more spectacular close up. More than 90 years ago this 3.5-tonne behemoth was powered by a 7.5-litre straight six making... 108hp. Top speed was in the region of 27mph.

The museum was founded in 1994 by the late Robert E. Petersen; as the founder of Hot Rod magazine, his collection predictably enough features all manner of drag cars, from the classic to the contemporary. The appeal is a little hard to explain to European sensibilities, but the provenance of what's there is again impeccable.

Finally, it's worth noting what is there but not in this gallery (some exhibits are not owned by the museum, and therefore not able to be snapped whoever you are): the first Porsche 911 R ever made, one of three Porsche 356 Superlights, one of two Porsche 916s and the first 911 E modified by Rob Dickinson, he now of Singer fame. There's more that's not Porsche too, including an old Denny Hulme McLaren M8 Can-Am car, a 1947 Ferrari 202 Berlinetta and one of the incredible AAR Eagle MkIII sportscar racers, the model that proved so dominant in the IMSA GTP series of the early 90s.

So whatever your automotive poison, there's something worth seeing down there in the vault. Then there's the whole rest of the museum to explore as well! And while downtown LA is never going to be a small trip from the UK, any petrolhead in California must pay a visit at some point. Preferably a long one...

The article is not wrong in saying the Round Door Rolls looks much more impressive in real life, the size of it doesn't come across in pictures, the grille comes up to chest height. Perhaps the most striking motorcar I've ever seen.

That's Cadzilla

It's a 1948 Cadillac built by Boyd Coddington for Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top fame in the late 80's.

The Petersen museum is a great place to visit, if you're ever near it's well worth having a look round

You can tour the Petersen vault, its an additional charge, and no photography is allowed, there's a big burly bouncer who follows the tour group to make sure no stragglers get off some sneaky shots.

Some great cars down there, but the guy who ran our tour was just making stuff up when he didn't know. Apparently the XJ220 is classed as an HGV in the UK because of it's length, and has an experimental V16 engine.

I believe they also have Saddam Hussein's Mercedes Grosser in there. I don't know why, but that car is one I am intrigued by. Despicable man, amazing car..

They do indeed! The Tour Guide couldn't go into much detail regarding how it was acquired, however given his lack of knowledge elsewhere, I suspect the genuinely didn't know.

Most likely it was driven from his compound and straight into the back of a Hercules? And them some red tape probably said it couldn't be kept by whoever had nabbed the keys..

It appears to be a V6, which seems really strange given the rest of the car.

Ford flatheads have siamesed central exhaust ports (it's a V8). Had to think about that for a bit then looked at the picture and saw what you were getting at! smile

I visited about a month ago and did the vault tour. The girl who took us around really knew her stuff. Great detail on most of the cars including the history. She did say there are often new cars on site that she doesn't know too much about but these would be one offs. I did ask about cars that she skipped past (Ferrari Sergio) and her knowledge was superb. Not just a scripted tour. She correctly gave the history of the XJ220 (great expectations/4x4 and a V12 v 2wd and a Metro engine reality......but a fabulous car launched at a challenging time....then sunk by the Mac F1).

Re Saddam's Grosser, from memory she said it was liberated from one of Saddam's compounds and ended up being driven across the border to Jordan. It ended up at the Mercedes importer there where Peterson was informed and a deal was done.

I visited when a Porsche exhibition was on - highlights were Yellowbird #1 and the 4 door 996.
If visiting, the vault tour is a must.

I visited the Petersen Museum during a West Coast USA roadtrip a couple of months ago. Absolutely loved it was phenomenally well presented with some awesome exhibits, definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Didn't get to see the vault but I'd love to go back again sometime in the future and check it out biggrin
