Cupra Terramar first look

A digital reveal of Cupra's second model takes place in a week; here's a hint of how it will look

While the launch of a new Cupra SUV at a Geneva show that will also include a Cayman GT4, Bentley's centenary car and the new Morgan may not be the most interesting news, it is of course a significant milestone for the brand. That's because, while the Terramar is like the Cupra Ateca in being an SUV, it will be Cupra's first car with a bespoke body.

The Terramar is said to bring "eye-catching design and high-end quality to a segment that is incredibly significant but whose customers still yearn for a vehicle that stands out from the crowds." Obviously there's not much to tell for now, beyond the recognisable Cupra insignia featured on the boot and the full-width light bar that's clearly making a comeback in car design. For those more preoccupied with driving their car, Cupra is promising that the Terramar will deliver "stunning look with a dynamic driving experience."

Beyond that there's nothing else yet, Cupra making additional claims of "a special and unique car" ahead of an online reveal next Friday. After that, it will be seen in the metal at Geneva, presumably with further spec details. Stay tuned...

I think Seat learned there lesson, they needs SUVs to survive. Consequence being that the Cupra brand only has SUVs so far...

But this one looks wide and perhaps 'low'? Actually don't mind ground clearance and suspension travel per se...

Apparently a kind of Ateca Coupe. Could be a relatively sweet/good drive, for a SUV...

I work next to a Seat dealership and they've got a couple of the current Cupra SUV laying about. Honestly looks fantastic and sound great. Excited to see what other things the Cupra brand bring out. Plus those badges look great in the flesh.

It’s like when you ask a girl for a picture and it is a filtered one of her face with her body hidden

SUVs are all well and good due to profitability. But it won't give the Cupra badge any credibility.

Need to do something unique like a coupe or similar, a halo model.

I'm pretty sure Cupra are in it for the profitability though. We PHers love 'halo' models but there's scant evidence they make any commercial sense - Toyota managed to become the biggest most profitable car company in the world* without making anything particularly exciting. I doubt they sold many Camrys, Yarises or Rav-4s to people who could wax lyrical about the 2JZ-GTE engine.

  • Yeah I know it's VAG now.

I think you're a size off. The ateca is a pumped up Leon/golf/A3 so it's Q3 and I presume this will be q5. Think the Tiguan and toerag fall under those sizes as well.

The Q5, Q7 and Touareg are on a different platform to the others (MLB, with a longitudinal engine), which makes a size comparison a little more difficult. All of the others are MQB platform in various levels of length and width.

For example, the Tiguan is 20cm shorter than a Q5 but is pretty much the same size inside.

Ateca is based on the Ibiza, similar size as the VW T’roc, and I believe the Audi Q2. The Arona is Tiguan size.

I quite like the Ateca, seems a sensible size crossover without being ungainly. The 1.5 tsi engine gives it a reasonable turn of pace so a ‘hot’ cupra rebody could be entertaining.

Other way around - Arona is MQB-A0, and is Ibiza sized. The Ateca is based on the Leon (even the interior is 95% the same).

I thought the torroco (think it's called that) is the kodiaq equivalent (7 seater)
