AM-RB 003 officially named Aston Martin Valhalla

We quite fancied the Aston Martin Völva. But Gaydon's brain trust thought different...

Aston has continued its plunder of Norse mythology by naming its forthcoming hypercar the Valhalla. The mid-engined hybrid model, the product of a collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and formerly known as the AM-RB 003, will join the Valkyrie in Aston's long-running tradition of 'V' cars.

According to the manufacturer, Valhalla means warrior's paradise - although a more direct translation would be "hall of the slain", an enormous and majestic hall in Asgard, headed by Odin (according to Wikipedia).

Conjuring up an image of a large room isn't quite as cool as invoking the female figures who would choose which men died in battle - and it's not nearly as good as Vantage or Virage or Vulcan or Vanquish - but Aston is apparently determined to continue with its current Scandinavian theme.

The heritage of V-based names is now in its seventh decade, the Vantage designation having been applied to high performance versions of the DB2 in 1951 (although it was never physically badged as such). The name eventually became a model in its own right in 2005.

"Aston Martin model names always attract a lot of attention. They do so because they invariably capture an emotion or tell a story. In following the Valkyrie we knew the Aston Martin Valhalla needed to make a strong statement of its own, yet also offer continuity and a clear connection", remarked Andy Palmer, Aston's CEO.

"Norse mythology contains such powerful language and rich storytelling it felt only right that the AM-RB 003 should follow the Valkyrie's theme. For those fortunate enough to own one I'm sure they will recognise and appreciate the name's connotations of glory and happiness, for there can be few more hallowed places than the driver's seat of an Aston Martin Valhalla."

I like the name Valhalla but considering it's Norse myth and the afterlife for fearsome warriors I'd expect the name to be attached to a "rough" vehicle.

Elysian from elysian fields seems to suit this better albeit Greek mythology.

As car names go that's pretty badass. I think Clarkson coined it first though for the TVR T350.

I was thinking it might get called the Guppy as that front is just not right. I appreciate aerodynamics will dictate much of it. But it needs to improve for production form?

Aston Martin Valerie - comes with a habit
Aston Martin Valentine - only comes in pink
Aston Martin Veruca - Has a knobbly texture
Aston Martin Flying V - has 11 gears
Aston Martin Valinch - runs on ethanol
Aston Martin Volantis - Game of Thrones edition
Aston Martin Ultra Violence - plays Beethoven loudly whilst beating you up on the track
Aston Martin Vérité - a true sportscar

Anyway, plenty of fun to play with this V-naming strategy. I like to have a bit of fun so keep going with it please Aston.

Cygnet doesn't start with V.

Rapide and Lagonda also don't.

Vendetta or Vengeance would surely have been a better name for a car that is taking the fight to the established marques, and would follow nicely on from the theme of the Vanquish?

Pretty sure it won't be as that interior isn't and neither will that bonnet/front pass pedestrian crash regs' as it is. And unless it will be used in a rain free country it is going to need wipers and that means that bonnet will be raised to get the motor and spindles underneath it. It has a long way to go to meet production form. I let you point out where the mirrors/rear vie screens are being hidden?

The Vulcan didn't have many of those things going into production either - as it wasn't a road car it didn't matter.

But this is a road car?

Aston claiming the dynamic brief for the car is to be class-leading on both road and track. (Autocar)

Well yes of course, but that wasn't my point.
