Cancel Union Membership
Discussion
I've been a Union member since around 1989 but have decided that it's no longer for me.
The Union in question has a web portal for membership questions etc. which I have used asking them to terminate my membership with immediate effect as a new sub is due on Monday.
Instead of cancelling I've had an email back asking for me to phone to discuss my membership. I've replied telling them I do not want to discuss my membership I just want them to cancel it !
Yeah I could just call but why should I ? I want to leave that's it …
If I just cancel the direct debit will I be on a sticky wicket or will my previous emails asking them to terminate my membership be enough ?
Cheers

Imagine it depends on the T&C's of the union in question.
Any idea where the T&C's may be ? Cant find anything about cancelling membership on the website.Just out of interest what could possibly be in the T&C's of a Union that would stop me cancelling by sending an email ( that they have recieved and replied to ) specifically requesting they cancel?
' Thou shalt not cancel thy subscription by email or message. Thy must speaketh to a Union Representative in person or thy Membership shalt not be cancelled' ?
Never been in a union, so don't know, however I can well imagine something along the lines of giving 28 or 30 days notice. Is the DD payment in advance or arrears?
If the union is heavily present and influential in your work places might be worth avoiding a black mark against you.
Unions definitely not my bag.

I work in probably for the most heavily unionised company in the most heavily unionised sector and in my experience that’s nonsense. If the union is heavily present and influential in your work places might be worth avoiding a black mark against you.

We have people switching unions and leaving unions for whatever reason and, to be a bit frank, no one gives a s

Simply cancel your DD and that’s it. They want you to phone to try and persuade you to stay but if it’s not your bag, then it’s not your bag.

t - it’s your business. The local rep may ask as to reasons why but again, it’s your business. If there’s any industrial action, you’ll be still protected if you participate (under ‘protected action’). There are no black marks recorded against you and you’ll no doubt still be able to approach the reps for informal advice if you get along with them, but they won’t represent you should you need them.

I had to do this once before doing stuff online was really a thing. A phonecall to the union resulted in lots of sucking of teeth and a general sense of, "No one leaves the Union". I was eventually informed that it involved some hugely bureucratic process which I really couldn't be bothered with.
So like you I simply cancelled the direct debit and apart from a couple of letters, the first of which arrived within days, advising me that unless I reinstated the DD then I would lose all union representation with fairly immediate affect that was pretty much it.
It seemed like a very efficient way of cutting through the red tape and secured my view that they were a bunch of self serving wasters with no real interest in me beyond picking up my subs every month.

Not in my experience. I've found the majority of them to be fair-minded reasonable people looking out for the best interests of their members and aiming for a win-win outcome. However Union reps from Liverpool tend to be the most annoying awkward pains in the arse imaginable. It's like dealing with wannabe Derek Hattons on speed.
My OH decided to leave her trade union and they local rep was difficult when she asked. Her subs were deducted from salary, so I advised her to ask the Payroll Manager to stop the deduction, which she did without question over the phone in about 30 seconds.
She still gets all the Union stuff and new membership card every year - and this was over 4 years ago now.

Just because there’s no union now in your workplace doesn’t mean you can’t be a member of the union. You can still get the benefits I.e. sickness benefit and redundancy benefits. 2) No union now in my workplace

So perhaps it is worth talking to your local rep anyway, there are levels of membership so you could probably adjust what you’re paying for to suit if necessary.

I'm not interested. I've been paying my subs now for 30 years and this is the first time i've contacted them. Like I said to them I simply want out.So perhaps it is worth talking to your local rep anyway, there are levels of membership so you could probably adjust what you’re paying for to suit if necessary.
They replied to 2 emails I sent requesting they cancel saying they wanted to speak to me and left a message on my voicemail.
I sent a third email telling them again to cancel my membership and the only contact I want with them is an email confirming they have done that.
Not heard anything.
I've cancelled the direct debit.

I resigned from our union years ago after our reps sold us out to the management, I will never ever be part of a union again it was an utter disgrace, I wrote to the union head office complaining about what happened at our workplace and didn’t even received a reply, I had been a union member for over fifteen years they could not give a toss...scum.
