Novitec teases 780hp from Lamborghini Urus
Why make do with a weedy 650hp Urus, when Novitec could sell you a faster widebody one?
Turns out tuned Lamborghini Uruses are like buses - the Abt car arrived earlier this summer, and here we are with a Novitec example as well. This seriously ups the ante, too, with 780hp; an upgrade with the potential to provoke one of the most tasteless and unnecessary one-upmanship contests ever.
Through a Novitec turning module for each cylinder bank (tweaking boost pressure, ignition and injection) as well as new exhausts, the most potent enhancement yields another 132hp and 134lb ft from the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. That means maximum figures of 782hp and 760lb ft, which are appropriately daft for a tuned Lamborghini. Novitec says 62mph passes in 3.3 seconds on the way to a 193mph, going to show how much energy is required to shove along a Urus - that's just 3mph faster than a standard one. Still, many will surely find solace in that formidable torque, wondering how on earth they ever overtook anything with a mere 626lb ft.
That's probably not even the biggest story with the Novitec Urus though, because the German tuners have also created a widebody kit for the SUV. Called 'Esteso', the 14-part conversion is said to be wind tunnel honed and adds 10 cm to the rear end (plus 12cm at the back). Novitec reckons Esteso lends the car a "lower and sleeker visual stance" which, to be fair, it rather does. While of course totally ruining any off-road capability - the 23-inch wheels and remap of the air suspension for a lower ride height also do their bit - could it be argued that the Urus quite suits the change? Lower and wider often works well for a car, the Sant'Agata stallion now more chunky coupe than gawky SUV. Maybe it's the lighting, but it's easy to imagine far worse - isn't it?
Elsewhere it's typical Novitec fare, with all manner of quilted this, gloss that and matte everything else. Many will disapprove, obviously, though no Urus buyer has made the decision to drive one hoping to diffidently slip into the background. This raft of upgrades, therefore, could prove rather lucrative, especially with the carbon options as well. And if it all seems a tad unassuming, expect Abt back soon with bigger turbos, larger exhausts and 800hp-plus...
Visually though I think lowering it spoils the look (and this is from someone who "slammed" a Focus RS purely for the looks ).
"New rules provisionally agreed by the EU mean that speed limiters will become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from 2022. In a move which campaigners hope will revolutionize road safety, all vehicles in the EU would be fitted with a system that restricts them from breaking the speed limit"
TX.
Missing the point completely I know (and slightly deliberately). Must be an age thing - when the Lotus Carlton was released I wanted one partly because it represented total excess and annoyed the Guardian reading public at large. Now I feel like one of those people who would have been annoyed back then !
