Ferrari 488 GT3 updated for 2020
'Evo 2020' gets optimised aero, a longer wheelbase and a 2kg-lighter seat...
While this might not be as dramatic as Lamborghini's Jerez reveals (more news on that soon), the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 remains interesting nonetheless. Firstly because it's a Ferrari race car, and all Ferrari race cars are interesting, and secondly because this could be the last season of 488 racing; with the road-going F8 Tributo already launched, a motorsport version can't be far off. The 488 will take some replacing, too: in January of this year the 488 GT3 achieved its 200th victory in just 406 races across the globe.
To (presumably) bid farewell to the 488, then, Ferrari has been through the car with the finest of fine tooth combs. The twin-turbo V8 is untouched beyond a new ECU for reliability and "smoother, more precise torque delivery", the main focus instead being on aero, vehicle dynamics and safety. Quite incredibly, that first point saw more than 18,000 hours spent on CFD simulations and wind tunnel testing; the results are a new bumper with a smaller section under the headlights, bigger flics for more downforce, turning vanes inside the splitter, larger front wing vents and even a more tapered front section of the door. Easy to imagine, given all that, where those 18,000 hours went...
Elsewhere, this Evo 2020 car has the longer wheelbase from the GTE car, which - as well as naturally making the conversion from GT3 simpler - also reduces tyre wear. Efforts have been made to reduce vehicle weight, too: making up more of the required kilos for Balance of Performance minimum weights through ballast is preferable because of how low that's mounted, benefitting the centre of gravity. Ferrari hasn't specified much about where those weight savings have come from, but does mention a "more rigid and robust" Sabelt seat that will also feature in the GTE car and saves 2.4kg. Finally, this GT3 Evo 2020 benefits from "optimised" traction control and ABS.
Want one? Of course you do, it's a bright red Ferrari racing car that's even faster around a track than the last one. Handily, those who already have a bright red Ferrari racing car (aka the other 488 GT3 models) can upgrade to 2020 spec through a kit; other race teams set on this brand new model will presumably have their order in at Maranello already...
