Production Lexus LC500 Convertible debuts

LA show the perfect backdrop for Lexus's swanky, V8-powered drop-top

Consider the back catalogue of Lexus convertibles, cars like the insipid SC430 and IS250C, and you'd be forgiven for mustering up little enthusiasm for another one. But things are a little different for the LC500: not only did the concept look amazing, the standard coupe is an immensely likeable vehicle. And one more V8 cabrio in the world can't be a bad thing.

Wisely, Lexus hasn't deviated far (if at all) from the concept for the production version. Official line on the looks is that the "soft-top roof creates a distinctive and sporty silhouette, while raising and widening the line of the boot lid produces a dynamic-looking side view that emphasises the car's low and wide stance." The roof itself is a four-layer item, with a focus on maintaining refinement inside and the LC aesthetic outside. It can be raised or lowered at up to 31mph, taking 15 seconds to open and 16 to close back up again.

To offset the lack of rigidity, the LC500 Convertible has additional chassis strengthening that "supports the same signature driving quality as the coupe." There's a rear suspension brace, as well as magnesium and aluminium strengthening underneath. A kerbweight hasn't yet been issued, although given the hardtop already lugs around 1,970kg there isn't a hope in hell that the cabrio will be less than two tonnes. Which is quite a lot.

There's nothing in the powertrain to counteract the additional kgs, this LC500 using the same 478hp, 398lb ft 5.0-litre as the coupe. Still, given this sort of car should be more about cruising than bruising, perhaps the occasional lack of urgency found in the coupe will be less irksome here. Once more the 10-speed auto is standard fit; indeed the biggest mechanical changes are the introduction of a sound generator that transmits engine sounds through the dash for those inside, and an exhaust valve to get extra noise for those standing nearby.

Speaking of sound, Lexus has apparently gone to great lengths inside to "manage wind flow and maintain quietness in the cabin." The aim is, basically, to have the best of both worlds: the feel of a convertible with the refinement befitting of a big Lexus, meaning passengers can still chat to each other or enjoy the Mark Levinson stereo. So the car comes fitted with Active Noise Control, a wind deflector, additional sound insulation and reprofiled mouldings to benefit airflow.

All of which should add up to a rather lovely open-top GT - an "Exhilarating Performance driving concept, no less" - and, potentially, the best LC500 yet seen. Because while the big Lexus coupe can struggle in a dynamic assessment against German rivals, the criteria are different for convertibles: something this good to look at and this luxurious, powered by a stonking V8, should find plenty of fans. Interested parties can place a pre-order from December, with deliveries next September. Because who wants an SL anyway?

What a cracker! The front jars a little, but most modern cars have a fish mouth it seems.

I'll take mine in the blue colour shown. I better check my account just to make sure I was the Euromillions £105million winner yesterday.

One of the few moderns that really appeal. This looks even better in cab form.

I'd take mine in the purple seen on the Mercedes S-Class convertible with cream leather.

Oh god so much want.

I hope it's appropriately comfortable and not pointlessly trying to be 'sporty', I'd have mine in that blue as well please, what a fine looking thing, and although a little small, I'm sure I could live with a 5.0 litre V8 for effortless wafting and what better way to enjoy the noise than with a convertible cloud9

Seeing an LC500 (especially in the yellow or deep red) is such an event amongst normal traffic, even more so with the V8, I would absolutely love a convertible to enjoy when I don't want to drive around like my hair is on fire.

I'm sure the equivalent BMW will outsell it 3000 to 1 rolleyes

That's quite a good point, the Mk IV everyone is so hung up on was more of a reasonably powerful heavyweight bruiser when it came out as I recall, not a mid range sportscar, they could have feasibly trimmed a little weight, stuck the turbo straight 6 in there with the wick turned right up and made something far more like the concept scratchchin

Presumably BMW wouldn't flog them all of the drivetrain / interior without some platform development sharing though and the LC's platform wouldn't have suited a Z4.

I know it's popular to say that the Lexus offering is 'chintzy' but this is so much more stylish than the equivalent BMW M4 Cab or Mercedes AMG C-class.

It's just a shame that hardly anyone in the UK will buy one, making them a rare sight!

Very nice (with the exception of the aerial shot which looks a bit odd). Two tonnes though.

Not 100% sold on the massive grille, but lovely from every other angle.

One of the rare instances in which a cabrio version looks better than the coupé. Really nicely proportioned thing, guppymouth grille excepted.

Exactly why i would buy one, no silly entry level engine, but I definitely wouldn’t compare it to 4 or C class.

As a coupe, this is already one of the most desirable cars to me on sale today.

As a convertible, it's just knocked the coupe down a slot. What a wonderful grand tourer.

Prefer the coupe as the convertible looks far too long at the back with the roof down.
