Hi,

Im back with another Volvo (previous XC90 & V50) this time its a Phase 3 XC70 SE Lux D5 (185)

Still getting to grips with the Volvo (my first auto too), enjoy the little touches such as compass in the rear view mirror/wood trim and of course the comfort!

First job was replacing a blown position light bulb, as is the volvo way - the headlight removes fully making it simple, despite a stubborn connection

It will be getting a full service & cambelt/aux kit very soon, all progress will be documented here...

Longlife sidelight bulbs. Good plan in a Volvo. From my experience with family members ones it's rear sidelights and front bulbs are always needed. Very solid though, feel better than the usual German suspects, even after the Ford influence. smile

Does it have the easy headlight removal so you can change bulbs indoors in the warmth.

Planning to do much with it? Tempted by an estate and like some of the novel ideas the Swed's come up with.

Oil & filter/Air & Cabin filter change

Went with Westway lubricants 20L 5w30 A5/B5 oil, will give me enough for 3 changes (plus top ups)
Bosch Air/oil/cabin filter

Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

dropping the oil - no jacking up needed, access is good.
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

whilst the oil was draining, replaced the sump plug washer
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

focus then shifted to the air filter (old one didnt look too bad)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

new air filter
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

undoing the oil filter - had to tip my shed upside down looking for my 36mm socket - easy access at the front top of the engine
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

oil filter (new vs old)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

oil filter housing cleaned out
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

new oil filter & rubber seal
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

new oil filter in (need to do something about those wires)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

0w30 oil & my new pouring jug - makes it much easier (5 litres below)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Plus 0.5 litre (5.5 litres in total)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

oil going in, no funnel & no mess!
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

5.5 litres put it just over 1/2 on the dipstick (give or take, its not 100% flat)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

pollen filter, bottom of glovebox needs to be removed and a bit of pushing and pulling to get the old one out
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

old vs new
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Job done. I then reset the service reminder in VIDA - if anyone can direct me on where to go to reset the oil quality let me know.

Next steps:

Brake fluid change
Fuel filter change (need to wait until tank is 1/4 full - may take some time given the present lockdown)

Booked in to a local garage for;
Cambelt Kit (Belt & tensioner & idler pulley)
Aux belt Kit (Belt & tensioner)
Aircon belt

Just replaced my one with something bigger. Was a great car with all the kit - heated/cooled seats, radar cruise, blind spot assist etc.

I put a tdi-tuning box on mine, would highly recommend that - improved the low down grunt and economy.

Was yours auto or manual? What did you replace it with?

Had the XC70 into the local garage for the following;

Cambelt kit (INA)
Aux belt kit (Dayco)
Air con belt (Dayco)

Due to miscommunication the aux belt tensioner was not changed, no worries, straightforward job;

Jack up & remove arch liner
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Aux belt setup
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

With a torx socket take the tension off the tensioner to allow the aux belt to be slipped off
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Penetrating fluid into tensioner hex bolt
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Previously replaced by PO with genuine volvo parts, interestingly it was identical to the Dayco one i had as a replacement (genuine one on left with Volvo markings. Dayco APV2740 was the replacement part number). Appearance, smoothness of bearing was almost identical between new / old (old one was 5 year old).

Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

New tensioner in place
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Test rotation to ensure all is good
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

---
Brake fluid change

Following advice from VIDA (and against the normal way i would do it - furthest away from master cylinder to closest) the bleed order was;

Passenger Front
Drivers Front
Passenger Rear
Drivers rear

Sucking out most of the old fluid
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

A gunson easibleed made the job easier, passenger front, lots of air
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

---
Fuel filter change

Reversed onto ramps to make access easier.

Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

This is what you are faced with being AWD, space is tight but not impossible by no means
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Laser filter removal tool in place (took some wiggling, genuine tool looks slimmer so maybe easier)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Release water drain plug and released a small amount
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Tool can be turned 180 defore running out of space, i managed to continue by hand from this point
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Nearly drained
NOTE: Eye protection is a must!
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Removed (no need to remove drain plug to allow removal)
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Old vs new
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

New filter fitted
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

New seal fitted
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

I have a lazy injector for a few seconds when starting from cold (slight misfire) I took the oppourtunity to fill the filter housing with a little of this, the rest went in the tank
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Due to the excess width of the tool, tightening was impossible with the tool - however the required 25nm was achieavable by hand turning the filter housing.

The ignition was primed 3 times before attempting to start - it started no issues.

Work outstanding
  • Gearbox oil change (3x sump dumps with a couple of hundred miles between each 3L change)
  • Haldex oil and filter change
Work completed
  • Oil & filter
  • Air/Fuel/Pollen filter
  • Cambelt kit (INA Cambelt, tensioner, idler pulley & water pump)
  • Aux belt kit (Dayco Aux belt & tensioner)
  • Air con belt (Dayco air con belt)

Lovely looking example. These are definitely on the radar for replacing the Legacy at some point.

What is the auto box like on these? Almost everything I've read about the previous generation is bad! I had a XC60 D4 auto and that was fine over 3 years 70k miles.

In terms or reliability or feel/use?

As i understand they are reliable but the universal consensus is to change the oil every 50k or so. This is my first auto , i find it a little slow at taking off sometimes (noise but not much movement) - however i may need to change my driving style for auto and give it a little more 'gas' - time will tell as i get used to it. However other than this , its perfectly fine, nice and smooth and works well on the motorway.

I had a previous XC90 manual (thread on here) and despite having a rareish manual (more sought after) i immediately thought it would be more suited to an auto, i guess the XC70 is a similar beast.

I almost bought an XC70 from a main dealer recently. I thought the auto box was fine if a bit old school. They had a bit of a reputation for unreliability but the salesman put that down to the gearbox adaptations not being reset on change of ownership.

Nice looking XC70 you have. We have an XC70 and one job next week is to change the Haldex oil. Just waiting for the oil to arrive.

A question. With all the work your doing to the XC70, will you be changing the front and rear diff oils or do you see that as an item not required?

Fill plug is exposed, looks as though someone has been here before due to oil residue

Bit of plus gas and a breaker bar made short work of it (was tight to say its only supposed to be 40nm)

Just over 3L came out

New 3L going in
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Ran the engine until the temp got to 50 degrees, started at 36 degrees and it took ages! At this point i removed the level plug, a continous dribble came out
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Reset the transmission fluid counter
Untitled by Montana BI, on Flickr

Took the chance to check my oil level using VIDA (for interest as i have a dipstick). Curious as to where my 5.5L got me (64%).

Took it for a drive, no noticeable difference. Will repeat the process again in a few hundred miles

Looks great, trying to talk the Mrs into one of these as her next car. Off to view one tomorrow for the "sit" test!

Keep the updates coming - how come you didn't do the cambelt yourself by the way?

How did the "sit" test go ?

I priced up the cambelt myself but including buying a 300nm torque wrench, crank locking tool and impact driver put the cost within £40 of the garage price (£260) so it was a done deal with the garage option.

She likes it - looking for one now smile

Excited to get back into something Swedish (I have owned a lot of Volvos and then Saabs).

You enjoying the XC70 then?

Good news smile

Definitely enjoying it, my first foray into the world of an automatic, makes the whole driving experience more relaxing.

The engine is very 'throbby', more so than my old D5 XC90 (also with an EUR4) which isnt a bad thing.
