Renaultsport Clio V6 | Spotted

With new suspension amongst a host of other mods, might this be a Clio V6 for driving and not just collecting?

The Renaultsport Clio V6 has become a familiar star of classifieds features over the years, and justifiably so. Combine the wackiness of the idea with the car's rarity, along with some very punchy asking prices, and it's easy to see why the discussion returns to them so often. This one, though, is a little different...

Because we're all pretty familiar now, 15 years since V6 Clios went out of production, with the ultra-low mileage, factory fresh, exorbitantly expensive ones. There was the car advertised at £60k a couple of years ago, and even today there's a Liquid Yellow V6 with fewer than 1,000 miles on it for sale at POA - all guesses invited on that one.

There's quite a lot that marks this particular V6 out, however, and which makes it almost the polar opposite of all those pristine show ponies. It's a phase one car, first off, which is almost certainly the lesser spotted V6 thanks to its infamously tricky handling. And, to be entirely accurate, because there were fewer to start with as well, howmanyleft suggesting a peak of 213 original V6s were on our roads against 285 for the second generation. As a sidenote, that both now languish in double digits - the original at less than 50 - is a cause for some concern.

In addition, this is a modified Clio V6, of which there can't be many now given how prized originality is. There's KW suspension, which will hopefully help iron out a few of its less desirable dynamic tendencies, a Janspeed exhaust, a Momo steering wheel and the front splitter off a Trophy race car. Plus, quite clearly, the gold wheels, which the keen will have noticed are from a later car. The ad suggests they're on four fresh tyres, too, which is encouraging.

There's another key difference in this Clio V6 to others: usage. While some are out there with fair mileages, an incredible amount still seem to surface with four-figure odo readings despite plenty of passing years. This one has 40,000 miles under those gold wheels, driven both here and in France, with what's described as a "comprehensive" service history to back it up - including a recent engine-out cambelt service.

For a buyer keen to get the Clio V6 experience, then, and not simply acquire an asset, this one should hold a lot of appeal. Especially so with an asking price of £26,950; appreciation doesn't seem very likely, though neither does losing your shirt. Because, as these sorts of stories will always tell you, there really is nothing like a Clio V6. This one most certainly isn't original, but it might well be better for it, ready and raring to go as maker intended. Perhaps not with December a week away, sure, but then winter might be the perfect time of year to do a good deal...

I've always liked these and I saw one at the motorshow when they first came out. So different and individual. I'd love one.

We were in the process of moving from the centre of London to the suburbs in 2013, and I decided that since my wife was having a new house, I would get a liquid yellow Gen 2. Then the opportunity to relocate to Devon for a simpler life came up. I don't regret it, but I still love the Clio V6. I've missed the boat on a decent one for decent money though.

There was one as a prize on one of those win a car sites that are all over the place right now. Kicking myself I missed the draw.

Turning up to informal airstrip trackdays in Devon and seeing a bunch of these turn up (and get pushed hard) feels like a distant memory! I think we had 6 once.

Is that Clarkey's?

Took mine shopping earlier because the daily has been detailed ready to go on collecting cars. Managed a bag and a half in the frunk!

I drive mine regularly. Sounds phenominal, and with a couple of tweaks it handles like it should. Fantastic car, and the last of it's kind.

You really don't understand what a skunkworks thing this is until you get under the skin. I struggle to believe its an OE car sometimes.

Mine is OEM+ with an RS sabelt wheel, Recaro Trendlines, Clio V6 Trophy wheels and Trophy ducktail spoiler, and a sports exhaust.

I had one of these in 2010 I couldn’t sell the thing when it came to sale time I sold it for £5000 admittedly had done 60k miles and only gave £6000 for it, now they are this much rather sickening lol

Wasn’t the rumour that VW heard that Renault were working on a 3 Litre Clio and Piech thought it was a 3L per 100Km of fuel and spent millions developing the XL1 which was announced at the same motor show as this Clio and VW were thoroughly bamboozled?

Well over 200 of them on SORN though.

No doubt sitting as collectors cars, completely unused.

I can imagine.

I remember around 2009 I looked long and hard at a Phase 2 one for c£15k, and a Phase 1 model for £8.5k.

Decided it was too extreme and bought a Civic Type R instead as it would give me the fun I needed in a practical package. Looking back, I should have bought the Ph1 model and a sensible daily driver.

Oh how I am kicking myself now.

Yes! Lost touch with everyone when I sold my 172 Cup but I did go out in his Turbo 2 once, bit bonkers.

I passed up a Phase 1 in the same red colour for £8k as it was 'too impractical', I didn't even have kids. Oh well!

Love mine!...although it does have quite a few things changed on it.

I might get some frowns for it but I felt that as a oem set up it left quite a bit to be desired, just my opinion of course and I don't regard myself as a car expert!

Changing the suspension on it and getting it set up properly made a massive difference. Apparently they are very sensitive to alignment settings also. The seats were no great shakes as you can slip and slide all over the place.

The Cromodora wheels also a make a big difference to how it feels, with being lighter they made the car way more responsive to steering inputs.

I think the main thing is to remember not to drive it like a hot hatch. Not doing that gives you a better chance of surviving a journey on a cold, wet Winters day biggrin

Yes they're not the fastest things but there aren't many cars with the same level of lunacy that they give.

Swapped a space mile B7 RS4 for a Ph1 V6 about 4 years ago - definitely drew more attention and sounded better IMO plus it appreciated 8k in that time before cashing out

Sadly not a fast or rewarding car to drive on track especially for a novice - ran it alongside a 182 trophy which ran rings round it

Mega road presence though

I drove one on a track, it’s an interesting thing. Bucking, weaving, pitching, rolling and yawing. It could do it all... and all at the same time.

Not a good car to try to learn limit driving with.
