Lovely thread. I’ll take a look at the herbal remedies for our Samoyed. She’s not as active as she used to be when out walking and although not demonstrating pain she’s no longer jumping into or out of the car, we’ve had steps for years anyway, but she’s now reticent when facing longer drops when’s she coming back from chasing squirrels.
Also as a pup she fell in a reservoir after exploring the bank and since then she won’t enter water if she can’t see the depth. Not a problem now but in the summer the more she’s in and out of water the safer walks are. Being a Samoyed we are very careful when it’s hot. Any tips to get her over that. She loves the water but will not risk going too deep or jumping in. There’s a dog swimming centre near us we were thinking of trying

Hey there, yes I'd definitely suggest looking at the CAM info bear in mind any Hydro requires a vet check and authorisation/referral letter to OK your dog prior to you attending. Free swimming in particular can be really beneficial to maintaining fitness in older dogs but also UWT. Likewise with any supplements, pain signs or discomfort can be really easily missed and its always worth getting your vet to re-check if you see any 'reluctance' to do things they were once happy to do. Dogs can tolerate a lot of discomfort and they mask it very well.

Fantastic. Thank you very much.Hi, OP. Thanks for taking the trouble with this. Will be taking a read of the link re dog barking at other dogs. I think our rescue hound has a mix of wanting to interact with other dogs whilst also getting anxious about it. What we've noticed is the one time he doesn't bark at other dogs walking toward him, is when they bark first! When walking with other dogs he's actually ok, it's just the 'dog walking towards us' scenario where it can go wrong, irrespective of them being on the other side of the road. At times when the other dog owner can see the problem and offers a bit of socialisation time, it generally works out fine - it's just the approach. So it seems it's as much excitement at wanting to be with another dog as it is anxiety, but difficult to know.
Anyway, will have a read.

Sounds exactly like our Sam! He has fear aggression and barks/lunges at other dogs to keep them away, but like your Sam, if they bark or growl at him first, he doesn't react at all. Anyway, will have a read.

Ahhh thanks for your comments, I’m really glad it’s been useful for a few people already, I’ve got a few things still to add
I spent quite some time yesterday looking at the arthritis advice. Good to see that we were already doing most of it right but after speaking with our vet this am we're going to give the Boswellia herbal capsules a try. Thanks, much appreciated.Rushjob said:

Thanks, much appreciated.I had a nutrition consult 18m ago, I have 2 x 11 year old dogs (one that's had spine surgery and one with reactivity). Also a puppy with massively complex leg issues (will certainly get arthritis later from that) and a middle aged sporting dog. She suggested a herb mix with things to benefit all of them.... I buy all the ingredients on Amazon and make a huge container up, once a day I soak it in hot water and add to their food..... firstly I never thought they would eat it (but they love it) and secondly I wasn't sure how much benefit I would see..... however, the IVDD dachshund seems more comfortable being on the oil and my reactive is DEFINITELY calmer on chamomile flowers, so that everyone has noticed .

Pics on arrival pls!
Ok, don't know if this is going to work..... it's not a brilliant vid, I'm relying on the seller/breeder who is not totally tech savvy, but, Daisy as she is to be known is the one in the red collar https://youtu.be/4iIu9ZiISYAA trainer friend has just opened up another Online Recall Crash Course (3 weeks) starting Sat 20th Feb. Recall is so important - this is such a great course I would highly recommend it. I'm giving you guys a heads up because it does sell out fast every time. Suitable for pups and older dogs alike.

Have you checked the Wiki and clicked any of the links? Useful or no?
Did you know that there is simply LOADS to do with your dog to suit whatever breed you have and whatever your interests are.
Things like Scentwork and Tricks are brilliant for dogs because they use their noses and brains - it is often particularly helpful for dogs that find life a bit difficult or maybe have a physical impairment that means the more active sports are not appropriate.
Doing more with your dog really deepens your bond, your communication and relationship - so what's not to love?
Hoopers
Agility
Cannicross
Bikejor
Tracking
Mantrailing
Scentwork
Trick Schools
Obedience
Rally O
Heelwork & Heelwork to Music
Parkour
Kayaking / Surfing
Dock Diving
Flyball
Treiball
And others..... do you want to get out and do more with your dog but not sure how to get started? Please let me know - I teach Agility and Hoopers but I have friends who teach most of the things above - I am happy to gather info if anyone is interested.

There’s a few of these I’d like to explore as well. An active Samoyed is an easy Samoyed. Did you know that there is simply LOADS to do with your dog to suit whatever breed you have and whatever your interests are.

ETA - I’ll dig out an article on introducing pups... and add to the wiki That’s great and very true, if you let me know which ones you’d like to know more about and I’ll pull together some info.

Ok here’s a recommendation for you.
My friend Sian Ryan co-presented this brilliant series ‘me and my dog’
It’s being re-screened on Saturdays on BBC2 at 10am. It’s a fabulous show where a variety of owners and their dogs undertake different challenges - there’s some great dog science & facts included too.
Think it’s 6 parts

Oh sorry, I’m in the middle of moving house!
I quite like Karen Prior’s website for info. This is a good one. Also I’d recommend Steve Mann’s ‘Easy Peasy’ Puppy book
