VW Golf GTI (Mk5) | Spotted

Promised yourself a great Golf GTI for the anniversary year? There can't be many better...

It may have gone unnoticed, what with everything else going on of late, but there's a new Golf GTI anniversary edition on sale. The 45th costs £39,980, will do 166mph and comes as standard with an Akrapovic titanium exhaust. We're driving it very soon, along with the back catalogue of GTIs that VW owns, and all that promises to be a rather nice day out.

However, what if you fancy an anniversary Golf, but don't want to spend £40k on one? There are plentiful options of course, given how many birthdays have been marked over the year, right up to the 40th anniversary Clubsport of 2016. And though we probably should use one of the specials for a story, this Mk5 was too good to ignore.

You'll have heard the fifth generation Golf GTI story plenty of times before, but it's always worth repeating - not least because the car now first arrived 17 years ago. In stark difference to the present day, where cars like the Mk7 GTI meant the Mk8 had a very high bar to match, there was precious little expectation around the 2004 GTI. Because, put simply, the Mk3 and Mk4 hadn't been good enough. By the time of the MK5 it had been more than a decade since the Mk2 had disappeared, and many wondered if VW had simply forgotten how to do a hot hatch. It was hardly like the Polo was a source of any great inspiration, either.

VW did still know how to do a hot hatch, and the Mk5 Golf GTI was unequivocal proof of the fact. It was stylish and discreet and high quality, of course but also fun, fast and engaging in a manner neither of its direct predecessors were. Awards flooded in, and the foundations laid for the modern Golf GTI success story; perhaps certain rivals were still a mite sharper to drive, but the overall package was incredibly hard to fault.

Fortunately, the Mk5 is still modern enough for bargains to be found, with £7k buying a really decent one, but they are beginning to be worth more than later Mk6s as its significance to the GTI story becomes more widely appreciated. Then there are cars like this one: not a 230hp 30th Anniversary, but a standard, 200hp five-door, with the manual gearbox and tartan upholstery.

Nothing surprising there; what is surprising is that this 2009 GTI (very late for a Mk5, in fact), has covered just 7,227 miles since then. This is the one-lady-owner-from-new adage in the real world, garaged all its life and even being sold with half a tank of unleaded in it - a rare find indeed.

It's being offered at £14,950, or five times what the very cheapest Mk5 GTI on PH is for sale at. Naturally it's pitched at collectors, something the spec will help with as well as the mileage, and such is the Golf's rep it could easily slot into a group of hot hatch icons. In fact, so miniscule is the mileage that it could still be enjoyed for a couple of months each year and remain very lightly used. And whoever does get it next really should treat themselves to a drive or two every so often. Whether £15k proves to be a prudent investment is not for us to say, or we'd be the ones out there buying and selling cars rather than writing about them. What can be said with some conviction, however, is that a good Mk5 Golf GTI is absolutely worth spending money on. And it may look even more appealing by the time of the 50th anniversary...

Where did they (VW) lose their way?
This is how a Golf should look exterior wise, minimal and understated.
Have never seen the attraction of the tartan interior though.

Oh dear , if I'd wanted to keep a Mk5 Golf to one side for future preservation it wouldn't be a silver 5 door.

In my opinion if it were a first year model or last of line 2009 model in red or black 3 door with heated tartan interior it will get the proper Golf Nuts interested.

Price wise, £15k is a awful lot of money, I'd never spend that on a standard issue Mk5 , a low miles Edition 30 or Pirelli maybe but not that one as the spec is too weak.

The tartan is the best bit! When we got our’s it had to have heated tartans. Unfortunately the bolsters wear out easily. Not easy to find them fully intact.

There was a red 15k mile one for sale earlier this year for half this asking price. Unfortunately also poverty spec so I decided against it.

Most of these tend to have heated seats (came standard with leather) but mine doesn't, which still annoys me! Plenty of options to tick on these which off the top of my head

Dsg
Sunroof (rare)
Heated leather
Leather/Cloth wingbacks (ultra rare)
Xenons
Mfsw
Highline clocks (bigger trip computer screen)
Cruise
Lux pack - Power folding mirrors, headlamp washers?
Centre armrest
Nav

Plus probably a few I've missed. Good thing is you can retrofit a lot of them for not much.

When I needed something slightly more practical to sit alongside my MR2 Roadster a mk5 Golf GTI was top of the list. That was until I saw one driven by a shirtless chav with a leather baseball cap. I decided it wasn't for me and bought a BMW 1 Series instead. I think the Golf probably would have been a better purchase.

Haha, really? Amazed you decided that a 1-Series was the pinnacle of sophistication, early ones seem to be driven by the absolute dregs of society.

I've got to say £15k is too much at the minute for a standard mk5. Maybe some time in the future. If this was an ED30 or a Pirelli with that low mileage then yes definitely worth £15k imo, maybe even a smidge more. Much higher mileage ones still get around £10k it seems - and I have a pirelli that I've piled the milage on in the last 5 years (now at 125,000) and I'd still hope to get £6-7k for it - the ED30 and Pirelli hold value really, really well! And as much as I like the 5dr, and manual (which is what mine is) it seems that the better values at the minute are 3dr and DSG.

Poverty spec….with a glass sunroof! This really is a unicorn. The option list wasn’t exactly extensive with the Mk5 Golf GTI and as one of the last examples you’d have thought this example might have a few more bells & whistles. My Edition 30 was in Diamond Silver too; definitely not the best colour but it did have ½ leather heated seats a centre armrest & the full screen MFA. I added factory Xenons ( stock halogens are pathetic like most VW headlamps) the buttons to make the multi functional steering wheel, and the lower door lamps that mean old VW removed in 2005 leaving just a red reflector!

Your silver 5 door looks exactly the same as mine. Mine has done 15,000 miles.Only got on it the extras that I thought were any use and not items to help it sell eventually and that people rarely use. Oh ,and it's unmolested . I think that maybe 230 HP is just about enough for todays everyday use. Each to his own OF COURSE but isn't wringing 300-400HP out of this particular car perhaps just a bit of an ego trip?

Funny you should say that. On 3 occasions I have set out to buy a Mk5 Golf GTi and been disappointed by the ones for sale which lead to the purchase of a VW Corrado VR6, a E39 BMW 5 series and a Ep3 Civic Type R.

I still own the Corrado and Civic Type R and can't see me getting rid of either in the near future .

Only last weekend at a mates BBQ he mentioned he was thinking of selling his Mk5 Golf GTi so they've been back on my mind.. I'm tempted as it would be cheap but it's not a spec I'd want. My worry is I'd buy his and within weeks regret it and spend 3x the money on a Ed30 or Scirocco R.

Good choice, perhaps with a Milltek though hehe.... 3dr manual in Red is the holy grail R32 for me, I think there were about a dozen sold in the whole UK

The Mk5 Golf in GTi or R32 trim is still a fine looking car.

Always liked the MK5, it was such a big step after the MK4.

If it were on a pure white background they might get that price but seems rather steep to me.

I like the Mk5, but I’d want an Edition 30 because they look so much better without the awful lower black bumper and the wheels are lovely.

I like the Mk5 R32 a little too. Prices for them seem very high at the moment too.
