Sure the bike was a Swind - As in Swindon Powertrain, the guys that make touring car motors, moved into electromods and various other things.
I'd have one of the bikes in a second if I had the disposable to chuck around.

The national charging infrastructure getting a roasting on TV can't be a bad thing, anything to get things moving.

As it stands I think I'm agreeing with Guy - My future likely to have electric in it, for the domestic stuff at least. But still preferring ICE for occasional long touring. Wait long enough and trying to get a tank of super unleaded might be difficult, politically engineered petrol range anxiety!

It is odd to hate the idea of electric vehicle propulsion.

The sooner that sub/urban areas are rid of the constant stench and fug of diesel fumes the better.

We are talking about transport, which is mostly not a soulful experience.
For pure 'transport' like buses, trains, lorries (if possible) then it's fine, but I enjoy actual 'driving' and for me part of that is the sound of a fruity engine, gear changes etc, and an EV just doesn't have any soul. Their party trick of high torque drag strip type acceleration just doesn't excite me. If you want a car as a utility to get from A to B that's one thing, but if you want an immersive experience then it's ICE only for me.
I will hold back on my judgement till I try one but I have no irrational attachment to ICE, manual boxes etc, yet can see why they will always hold appeal the same way a steam engine at full tilt does.

I thought it was funny when he wheelied straight off the back of the bike.
That had to be a set up - someone with his level of superbike / bicycle experience just pops off the back? No way.
If it was set up it wasn't very well done, they didn't even film it.

I'd have thought that a longer swinging arm and a more gentle ramp-up of the torque would be preferable.

In its current state it would not be road legal, 60mph is bonkers on bike tyres and asking for trouble, electric bikes should only delivery full torque when required plus they are limited to 15mph

I managed to get to 45mph on my downhill bike years ago. It was terrifying hehe

I once did 60mph on a road bike on 23mm tyres down a steep road in the Lakes . That felt as if it was asking for trouble at the time eek

They have a strong accent and overalls in common, but Guy seems to watch people make stuff, while Fred would go into his old workshop and make it himself. Fred had a proper motor too, not some brand new Transit / MAN laugh Guy would probably beat Fred in a bike race, although they have both won the TT the same amount of times.
Though Fred was a steeplejack by trade one of the best videos of him on youtube is him erecting a ladder up the side of a chimney.

Fred was also doing all this stuff before health and safety was a thing.

I don’t mind Guy Martin in small doses but i do feel like he is a slight caricature of himself.

Something similar (it's too quick to see properly) goes through our village quite often, definately not doing 15mph. I assume they are pretty hard to police unless they are actually caught speeding.

Please do not cheapen the legacy of Fred Dibnah by comparing him to Guy Martin.
Has Fred Dibnah been granted full canonisation yet?

and yes, he did some very good programmes and some quite nerve-wracking climbing.

He was a bit of ladies man from what I remember too. Didn't he ditch his wife and take up with some young lady ?

He's very clever and highly skilled, if a bit mad. I like him, but in small doses smile

Wrong way round, wives binned him. He got upset when first wife booked foreign holiday without telling him. Got divorced soon after. His idea of a holiday was Blackpool with family dismantling a chimney in the rain with his wife helping, oops. I think he did a deal with the company to machine a part for the new steamroller. Sad watching him having to sit alone having evening meal of two fried eggs

Still a big fan though, just wish he had treated his wives better.

The first Mrs. Dibnah walked out because Fred spent more time on his chimneys and engines than with her and the kids. The second Mrs. Dibnah walked out for the same reasons as the first and the third Mrs. Dibnah stayed with him to the end.

Stupid question time.

On the motorway run to JOG the car got less efficient when it was on the motorway, presumably because it's working harder? Opposite to how a normal car gets more efficient as it gets into higher gears.

So, why don't EVs have a gearbox?

Air resistance is approx proportional to velocity^2. Go twice as fast, use four times the fuel - ish.

EVs are typically always energy efficient (although can store less onboard)
ICEs are always very inefficient, but gears help. Unlike an ICE, Inverter driven motors don't have only a narrow rpm band at which torque is produced efficiently. Some fast EVs do have two gears I believe, although I don't know how much the higher one is used.

How did you rate the attractiveness of the men in the other cars?
I didn't. The men were just ok to be there. wink
