Darling wife went against my advice and bought an ex display Asus laptop from Currys.

Webcam is disabled somehow. Can't get it to work on any platform.

Do Currys disable the display models does anyone know?

Is it disabled in the bios, the driver removed or disabled under hardware?

No idea! The symbol is just crossed through in the various apps. She's going to take it back to the store.

Might be worth checking the privacy settings.

Open up Control Panel, search for "Camera privacy settings" and there should be a checkbox for "Allow apps to access camera".

Have a look to see if there's a button that looks like this on the top row of the keyboard:

Is there a small and almost invisible plastic slide thing that covers the camera ? My new Dell came with one of these and it took me an hour to find it was covering the camera

No, it has the line drawn through the camera symbol when you open the settings. She bought it, she can take it back!

Check the BIOS... It's probably disabled in there.

That'll be a job for the shop I think. Shouldn't be supplied that way.

Try the key first before you take it back, I really think its that as if it was disabled in the BIOS or Device Manager or just unplugged or broken, Windows would say "cannot find your camera" or something rather than the camera symbol with the cross through it.
