Anyone (else) thinking of ordering the new Tamiya BBX buggy?

Its a brand new kit, but deigned to look old and more realistic to real sandrails and the like.

Not cheap, but I guess not expensive compared to some.

I have been considering a scale buggy for while and favour the turbo scorpion by kyosho...and may reconsider.
This is nice and the details look great but as mentioned the price is strong - but that is the way of the world these days!
In reality I just associate tamiya with cheap access to hobby grade build your own plastic kits and fantastic box art, which flicks a nostalgic switch within me from my youth...
So I will struggle to justify £400+ on an up and running tamiya buggy kit!!
Plenty won't though!

[quote=dr_gn]Needs some KC Daylighter lamp covers, and all the other 'proper' stickers on it.
Sod it I'm getting one for my birthday and

It does look good with the scale tyres, window mesh and spare tyre mounted..
It has some nice scale details with the front and rear light buckets...
I may wait and see if any aftermarket scale parts like alloy towers and perhaps an engine cover come out - Coupled with some scale reservoir shocks it could be turned into probably one of the best scale rc buggy/ sand rails around....

I'm a very hard 'no' - really don't like it. Different strokes for different folks and all that.
Just looks very 'plastic', especially the 'roll cage' and front shock tower area.
Would prefer a Wild One with some hop-ups, for what would be an awful lot less money.
Now, the Kyosho Ultima Dirtmaster - that is an awesome thing to these eyes!

Yep - love the spare tyre. It’s a nice blend of Super Champ-esque body and paint scheme, with enough design changes under the skin to make it quite novel. I think the wheels might get a semi-gloss overcoat, but then again it’s another differentiating touch.Sod it I'm getting one for my birthday and

To me that’s just another dull as ditchwater disc-wheeled generic buggy characature that looks the same as every other one. I think the point of the Tamiya version is that it harks back to the days of semi-realism, and I guess for those of us that grew up thumbing the pages of Tamiya catalogues in the ‘80’s, it’s a huge attraction. You can display it as a semi-scale model as well as run it. For me performance is irrelevant, as I suspect it is for the vast majority of RC car buyers. My son and I restored a Bosscat Comp last year, it’s great, but honestly, given the choice…

Loved and posted in your Bosscat thread. As a child of the 80s, who poured over the Tamiya catalogues, before getting my first car, the original Pajero, around '86/87 - I hear you. Only this week I picked up two original Porsche 956 RM-01s, one with a Newman body and the other a Rothmans, in great condition, with the black/blue Endurance motor. Love vintage and scale RCs.
Shameless pic:

I'd like to recreate the Bigwig of my youth (black instead of blue) or maybe pick up the rere-Boomerang but the RC budget is now blown.
The rise of RTRs, WLtoys and the Chinese brands appears to suggest that cheap performance is winning the majority share, whereas this appeals to a certain, more niche demographic, especially at that pricing. Different strokes for different folks and will be interested to see a build thread on here.

I do rather like a Kyosho Scorpion (or, whisper it; the Beetle) for a non-performance, display/semi-scale, vintage experience.
I would agree, I don't have a vast collection but a few RC's, some are hardly run at all, as it was the build that was the most fun and then having them as a static model.
Before Christmas I bought a new Fighting Buggy (2014 reissue) for exactly this purpose. It'd be nice to run it, but haven't even thought that far ahead yet.
I do have a few RTR's, although some I've rebuilt anyway.

As you say - different strokes etc. I think my interest waned after the Frog era, after which there seemed to be more and more race-specific or buggies that weren't really models of anything inparticular.

This thread makes me sad…
Tamiya Ferrari 312, Boomerang and a Kyosho Optima Mid, all of which I binned binned about 20 years ago…
Which fortunately are all now avaiable again as rereleases! Get buying and relive the glory days of silicone oil stains on your trousers and flying e-clips. And once you got those three come back here and be talked into buying other kits that you wanted back then but were unaffordable to 95% of us when we were younger like the Avante and EgressTamiya Ferrari 312, Boomerang and a Kyosho Optima Mid, all of which I binned binned about 20 years ago…
