Having a chat with some mates in the pub, one of them reckons that 20 limits are advisable.

I know their mostly around schools hospitals are generally sensible and have speedbumps / slalom sections, but didn't know if he was right - seems odd to me?

Some are signed as advisable.

Those that are not are absolute limits.

BIB, for those that are "advisable", what would you do if you observed somebody driving through at 30mph, say outside a school at 4pm?

Do a search on here for Tower Bridge.

There's several threads about the 20MPH specs enforced limit there, that is, according to one poster, catching over a hundred people per day.

Apparently can be done with hairdryers but the variability factor precludes the use of vascar. Apparently.
Something like that. IIRC.

There IS an issue though isn't there! Around here at any rate they DON'T have the "Roundel" type sign with 20 in it!........

Providing the Order making the 20 is correct and that it is properley signed then it is:

ENFORCEABLE,

(Must be the approved roundel)

There's one in Wimbledon (a side road off the common) that definitely isn't enforcable even though it uses the "roundel" sign. It doesn't start or stop with a proper large sign nor are there 30 signs at the ends. I am of the view that the signs were installed by the residents. All that you see are repeaters.

Around Motherwell there are signs on most residential roads with a 20 sign with green border and the words 'Twenty is Plenty'. These are advisory only but no doubt if you hit something doing 29 it would go against you.

There's some with the green border in Spalding too. The wording there is "Advisory limit" There's no such thing as an advisory limit, it's either a limit or it isn't!

Perhaps the council wanted a twenty, but they weren't allowed so they try to make it look as official as they can instead?

Since speedos only have to be accurate (or over) between 30 and 70 mph surely there would be some leeway if you were caught "slightly" above the limit?

Any road sign with a instruction within a red ring is a command and 'must' be obeyed (more examples: anything in a red triangle is a warning, inverted red triangle is 'give way').

Speed limits shown in those yellow matrix signs (without a red ring) usually located in central reservations are 'advisable'.

scroll down a bit to come to the sign.

That sign looks so wrong to me, either Photoshopped or faked: the white hue is not consistent, the angle and size of the ‘9’ doesn’t tally with the ‘1’, the pole between the signs isn’t visible.

After a bit of digging, it appears these signs appeared only on private roads, so they may not mean anything anyway:

The ones you describe might be bogus but advisory limits do exist. I drive past one every day. Look at the sign section of the H.C.

The ones in Motherwell are part of the Council's "Twenty's plenty" campaign for minor residential roads I think. If you lived in those streets you would agree that 20 is probably enough. If you don't, you wont - such is the way of life.

The signs have a green border so are advisory - ie not enforceable.

They are not illegal signs.

Ah! now they don't have the (20 mph)roundel sign here DVD, it's a square sign and within it (amongst other things saying "school area" is a small black roundel with 20 mph in it. The standard sized roundels are NOT used to denote 20 mph.

I'll see if I can get a photo.......
