OK guys and gals....who can tell me what the fastest lap of the M25 is?

I'm guessing it wasn't achieved on a Friday afternoon either

There was a lot of stuff on this just after it opened, lots of city boys in 911s playing. There was mention of a lap record but I cannot remember what it was.

They should cone it off once a year and run a 24hr on it

one of my "silver spoon in the gob" mates raced his mate in opposite directions of the M25 in his 911. Lost his licence in the process for doing silly speeds. His answer to that - mummy and daddy bought him a helicopter!!!!!!!!

mind you, they soon regretted in when he landed it on there lawn and regularly wrecked all nearby flower beds which i found amusing.

A long time ago I heard a rumour that a 959 had won a "race", completing the lap in about 40 mins.

The version of this particular urban legend that I have heard was late 80's city boys, regular event, lots of serious metal (porkers, donkeys, lambo's) and the time of 52 minutes.

52 minutes sounds quite realistic.

The M25 is 117 miles long including the Dartford Crossing.

40mins gives an average of 175mph
52mins gives an average of 135mph

both a bloody hard to achieve but I'd favour the 52min option

There used to be something called the Severn Bridge club, which (from what I understand) was a timed event leaving a central London hotel at 10pm and returning to the same point for midnight, having crossed the severn bridge and returning with a receipt to proove it. I've no idea if this still happens, but I'm told it was ran in the 70's & 80's.

It's 121 miles from central London - Severn Bridge, so you're really going to have to push it, but I guess it could be possible.

My uncle had a Muira at the time and was invited to have a go at it, but I don't think he ever did.

Has anyone else heard of this?

My dad rekons he was one of the first to do a full lap, way back in the (late 80s??).

It was in a Montego Diesel, mind. I think he hit 60 once!

I once heard what is probably an urban myth about rich Cambridge University toffs running an annual race from the start of the M11 at Cambridge to the M25 by any means necessary, including hard shoulder.
Anyone know anything about that one?

Not being a Londoner, I don't really know but I guess from what I read here sometimes that often lots of it is coned off and takes 24 hours to get round once!

That sounds about right. He's an architect from St Johns, Cambridge.

I did some testing on the M25 (telematics beacons and stuff) and drove the M25 in it's entirity 4 times a day - twice in each direction.

Think the best I ever did was about 2 hours... but that was during the day!

The difference in length between the two carriageways is only 2/3 mile!

I held the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst speed record while I was there (and may well still hold it) - the speed limit around the academy (private roads) is 15mph and I hit a peer-pressure assisted 90mph at one point (106 Rallye).

Doesn't sound that impressive, but there isn't really a lot of road at Sandhurst, and what road there is tends to be patrolled by armed guards

Erm, of course, all of the above could have been a figment of my imagination, officer...

Was called the A4/M4 club! we used to do Bristol (the Centre) to Harrods via the M4 in an hour and/or 2hrs via the A4 only. used my mini cooper S tuned van often on that run, used to touch 130mph on the white horse straight near Silbury hill often.......... aaahhh the good old times.....................

Does this sort of thing still go on in London?

I'm from the North West and on the first Sunday of each month I'm told one of the main car garages in Leeds (you can guess who) unnoficially runs a "drive" across the Pennines for it's supercar owning customers. It's a 5 in the morning thing and very much by invitation only. Does anyone know of anything similar? Even better, has anyone done it?
