My daughter wants an Ipod for her birthday.Dunno whether to go for the cheapie 2Gb or the 30GB with video playback.I must admit I know nought about the stuff, and what is the best site with the best prices.

What is the easiest way of converting her current collection of CDs into mp3.Any ideas?any links?

Cheers.

It totally depends upon your budget; there is quite a price difference between the different sizes.

Look at other hard drive media players, not just the iPod. It's not the best one out there by a long shot. Just look on Amazon for the Creative Zen... but the iPod is the best as a fashion accessory.

Windows Media Player is the easiest way to converting your CDs. It does take a while tho...

Thanks for the tip.The creative looks attractive.I am afraid she set her mind on the Ipod. She's got an MD mp3 player which she hates.I don't know whether to go the extra mile and get the 30GB or even the 80GB, twice the price I know but how good is it at video playback and sundry?
I discovered my Easy Media Creator7 converts CD tracks to MP3.

Hi Allnighter,

The iPod is the industry standard now for mp3 players. Although the video iPods hold a lot of songs, they're really used as hard drives to keep your music on, used in the home. The battery life isn't that good really, and whilst they can be used portably they are rather chunky, and the screen drains the power. I would advise an iPod nano if she's going to be mobile - very small, thin, lightweight. You can get either 2Gb, 4Gb, or 8Gb. You'll manage to fit 500 songs, 1000 songs, 2000 songs on them respectively. See apple.com/uk for details.

If you're going with iPod, the player will come with iTunes 7, which will 'rip' all your CDs to the computer, (mp3 format), and allows you to upload them onto your iPod really easily. iTunes is a great, easy to use program.

(I don't work for apple btw)!

Hope that helps tho,

Alex

Don't know when her birthday is but if you were thinking of getting one of the 'big' iPods you'd be better off holding-out for them to be redesigned. Sooner or later they're going to be totally re-done to work the way the iPhone works, with a touch-sensitive screen that occupies the whole of the front of the unit and therefore offers a much bigger video and photo viewing area. The controls will appear when you touch the screen and fade out when you've finished. I'm waiting for this before I replace my four-and-a-bit year old 10GB iPod which is still working brilliantly but can't do videos or photos.

The current nanos don't come with an iTunes CD: you will need to download it from www.apple.com/itunes/download/ (it's free though, and very good and easy to use)

I agree. The nano will still show photographs, keep your diary and contacts on, and play your music.

Apples iTunes is free to download, and you can just shove a CD in whenever you have a minute spare, and it is ripped automaticallly to the software, with all the track names, album artwork, and the like grabbed fromm the internet.

One point that makes the choice tricky, mind, is that the 8Gb nano costs the same as the 30Gb iPod video.

I prefer the nano, as it is smaller.

the nano's are the sexiest ones
As for converting, let itunes (the programme that comes with it) do the work. IMO it's very good at it and simple to use, does a far better job of retrieving the correct data for the Cd tham windows media, and can get the artwork for you as well.

I've just bought the wife a 4GB Nano.

I really didn't fancy iTunes and whole Apple empire thing, but now that we have the Nano I have to say that it's very nice and iTunes isn't the pain in the rear that I thought it would be!

Was that in store? At that price I would get one even though I don't need it!

If it was online can you send a link as I can't see it.

ipods ok, but once the battery dies, u cant replace it, at least other mp3 players have replaceable batteries

most mp3 players come with free software, otherwise www.audiograbber.com-us.net/
