One for the gas experts out there, turned the gas fire on this morning and a couple of the flames coming through the faux coals (I know, not our choice rolleyes hehe) flicker blue and bright emerald green. As it has never done this before (gone green) I just wondered what the cause could be and if I should be concerned about it? Can't seem to find anything about green flames on Google.

Comedy answers of course expected (this is P&P ) but sensible ones would be appreciated cos I am cold! Ta!

Copper in the fire?

(This is not a BiB bashing post, nor a suggestion) - I think copper burns green.

It is a wall mounted fire with one of those special flues for when you don't have a chinmey, but I was going to check the flue in a mo anyway. Only problem is I have to wake up the neighbours to do it (nurses) cos that wall is only accessible from their passage...dear god, I can't think of any other way of saying that rolleyes hehe

There should be a small gauze covering the air intake for the pilot light - check it hasn't been blocked, or fallen off and is sucking dust/hair in.

A special (cabbage smelling) flue?

I'd get it checked though - gas is naughty, and it's obviously not right.

My parents one used to do that when 1st lit. After a while whatever the chemical was would burn off. We put it down to the concrete that kept falling off the inside of the chimney and landing on the fake coals....

Certainly a hot piece of copper wire that's touched on PVC, or any halogenated polymer, returned to the burner will make for a green flame.
