It's my little brother's passing out parade on friday, he's been no help with regard to dress, and I dont want to look a tit! Anyone know what acceptable dress is?

Cheers!

i would have thought he would need a helmet so when he passes out he doesn't bang his head on the ground.

oh not that kind of passing out then? :-)

Passing out from what exactly?

Assuming it is forces, then pretty much regardless, you're not going to look like a tit if you go in a smart suit & tie. If he's passing out from Sandhurst (or I would assume the RAF/RN equivalents) and you've been invited to the evening dinner, then that would be black tie, but I assume he would've told you that at least!

ETA: If the latter, still turn up for the daytime part in a smart suit. You definitely would look like a tit if you actually went to the parade in black tie. wink

You will be amazed what people turn up in. Went to a friends in the middle of the year, was suited and booted. But my god some people do not have a clue. I thought I'd walked into a cross between a whore house and a benefits office. Unreal.

Just dress smart, you'll end up on lots of pics with your bro in uniform so something that will go with whatever he is wearing.

Definitely, you want something to fit in. Given the military theme....

Of course, to be credible, you will need a horse. And at least some rudimentary knowledge of the late 19th century. In Bengal. biggrin

That would be because a disproportionally large number of HM Forces are sourced from less-privileged backgrounds (and it has always been thus). These days the uniform of choice for such classes of society is mainly leisurewear; suits are strictly for funerals and court appearances hehe

Assuming he's non commissioned, and its a winter pass out, you need smart clothing that will be appropriate for the weather conditions. I would suggest a smart trouser suit and a suitable long coat. Dont dress like your going to a wedding or a funeral, more like that of a smart interview. Winter clothing for outside would be a good idea, but can be dispensed as soon as you go inside. Remember, parade grounds are often wind blown and cold at this time of the year, so dont wear a hat that will fly off at the first puff of cold air.

Ok, Im going for smart plain black trousers, smart jumper/top, plain black shoes and a long wool charcoal coat, sound ok? Need to get a plain scarf and gloves, me purple sparkly ones wont really go!

Another question, as hubby is going to wear a suit with a coat over, what style hat?! He doesnt want to wear a smart knitted beanie style hat, and the rest of the hats look daft on a 30 something.

The hat needs to keep him warm when outside. He wont be wearing it inside anyway. I'd suggest a simple fake fur jobbie.

My parents both wore suits and long wool coats (I passed out in Nov 99) was bitterly cold and lots of standing about, they only take it inside if the weather is really terrible.

Enjoy and well done to your son biggrin

Dark suit, tie and top coat. Black shoes. If you were in the Mob, wear your old reggie tie. Scarves are OK, esp old uni ones or rugby club, not Man U or Arsenal. Any hunting, shooting or fishing hat will do, its funtional and warm. The basic Army motto of; "Only a fool is uncomfortable", is still valid. Barbour outdoor wear is still acceptable but NOT the scaves or baseball hats.

Only wear kit (tie, scarf) you are entitled to, people will find out and you won't get offered another drink!

When in conversation with senior officers, I adopted a habit of addressing star ranks (Brigadier and above) as "Sir". It's not deference, its respecting their position and you are on their turf. All the others were addressed by their rank.

Have a nice day.
