I have dealt with a number of chaps with bank accounts with Coutts, who have all been well healed.
It seems to be an exclusive club to join.
I was wondering what are the requirements to open an account with Coutts, also are there real benefits or is it a bit "flaunt it" thinking.
Not that I have any intention of having an account with them. Curiosity.

now owned by RBS but to open an account you must have a minimum of £500,000 investable assets or £5,000,000 net assets.

TBH bit pointless as it marks you as a target

I also believe that you can't apply, you have to be 'invited'.

The are very good for business accounts, and they will bend the rules for personal accounts if they feel you may be eligable at some point in the future.

It's the only bank I've ever been to where a butler comes out and meets you at the door.

They have approx 50-100k personal clients, so pretty exclusive. You can get an account if you're minted now, or if they think that it's likely you will be minted in the future.

There is probably pretty much zero benefit to using them unless you are minted.

The benefits are like the AMEX Black.. the concierge, and the access..

from experience, the Coutts actually has more power than the AMEX Black now..

Mates couldn't queue jump the sandersons Purple Bar with the Black, but the Coutts meant straight in, AND a table...

Concierge is useful for trips / breaks away.. call up, tell them geographic area and what you're looking for (good weekend away, or glitzy weekend date) and they'll make suggestions, and pick up reservations which aren't usually doable!

As Ed says though, if you cant afford to be doing these sorts of activities regularly anyway, having the card will simply be lost on you... but I'd much rather have than not wink

Adam & Co are very good. Mostly it just means that you end up bypassing any phone banking type questions. Making transfers was very easy but no real perks to speak of. Barclays Private client is good too. I get to speak to Lucy each time I need to do something using one phone number, she knows me and everything just works.

Any of you wharfers out there..
Grab a copy of the Wharf Magazine this month, page 96 has a great article on Coutts' Concierge service, along with some funny anecdotes about some of the more unique tasks they've been asked to take care of wink

The best reason to get an account at Coutts is that when you want something they pick up the phone straight away and do it for you

But I get that from NatWest - direct line to manager & his PA. Say Hi to them (by name) and ask them to do what needs doing (transfer to another a/c, pay bills etc)

It's great.
