Serious question.

Is it jealousy, does the brand really have such an image problem.

I personally love BMW's, own a MINI and a old 5-Series Touring. The amount of negative comments I get about them both - nothing compared to positive comments I must admit - is suprising. You own a Mercedes, you wont have people slating your choice saying your car is "crap" and your a "snob" and making horrible generalisations about your personality.

From personal experience that I have encountered it does come across as jealousy. The amount of people I have come across who "hate" BMW's then subsequently buy one when the get promotion baffles me!

Seems similar to Porsche too. Is it just the fact that these two manufacturers are too good, make too good a product that people feel the need to, in such a sweeping generalisation, brand that as "awful".

This is not soley on PH - although lots of threads on this at the moment - but the general public on the whole. Incidently it is usually people who know nothing about cars.

Please dont turn this into an anti-BMW thread, I am generally interested why some people get so angry about the brand....and this was happening before the Rover saga redface

Well.. There is the archetypal BMW driver perception problem. Although this is perhaps largely in the past now.
And then there is that man called Chris Bangle, who's design efforts for recent BMW models has been questionable and much criticised to say the least. Some designs have been truly awful. Others less so, but being that Bangle still penned them, they get just as much of a slating regardless. The 1 series perhaps getting the most flack on this forum.

Either way, they are generally all great cars smile

I've been driving both my e36 and a toyota corolla work hack car.

In the Corolla I get let out of junctions in heavy traffic, never get abused by passing cars and people never try to race me off at the lights.

In the bmw this happens all the time.

Perhaps it's not bmw drivers that are tts they just become like that after years of aggravation from other drivers

I dont like them because people who are generally clueless about cars think BMW's are amazing.

I dont think BMW are hated, but their image (I'm guessing its that) does seem to attract many of the most arrogant drivers on the road. Moreso than any other Brand, its BWW drivers who have irked me most with their irresponsible driving.

Or do you notice them more because of preconceptions?

Envy (although what's to envy about my 5er is hard to fathom - I bought it for less than new Vauxhall Corsa money, so it's not exactly an aspirational car)/Herd Mentality (I hate BMW because all my mates do)

Oddly, I get more wound up about anti-BMW sentiment on PH than I do in The World - mainly because I'd like to be able to expect PH to be free from such idiocy.

In The World, I notice that anti-BMW comments tend to emanate from people who drive truly dismal vehicles, like French people carriers. Once, in the pub, I even got it in the neck for owning a BMW from someone who has an A-Class. Which struck me as somewhat ironic.

I've been called a "rich yuppy tt" for mine.

Which would be funny if it didn't come from the owner of a new Mazda 6 which cost well over 4 times as much as my mid 90s car.

It really is how funny people are clueless. If you ask a normal person off the street they will probably think BMW is synonymous with 100k cars.

You'll go far!

Does the 5 series sport drive as well as I have been told? I might get one!

I'm indifferent to them, for me seeing them as Taxi's in Europe basically says it all. Personally, they're over rated, but the do build a good car. The late model X5 is a triumph in build construction, they do feel like quality goods. The X3 though is a disgrace to the marque. I'd much rather have a Honda CRV than one of those vile creations. I work on them all the time and have driven everything in their line up but "ultimate driving machine" hardly. Mercs are the same, some bad (ML urgh vile) some awesome (SL500, awesome machine) but they all have compromises, the pedal feel on all mercs is horrid.

Most of the muppets I know who have either of these two marques, all fit in to the category of being fecking clueless when it comes to cars, buying purely on the price they paid for the car and what it means to their neighbours seeing it parked on the drive.

They both lack a true soul, although the M3 CSL is my pick of the crop, an awesome pure drivers car but your average BMW driver would think they were getting ripped off and complain about the hard ride!

It's not the cars IMO - although I'm not sure about the current styling - but the type of arrogant aspiring, pushy people who buy them to make a statement about themselves, both with the car and the style of driving they adopt.

That and the blinged up older 3 series driven by Chavs..

I agree with CJ here. I like to drive older and classic cars as they are more individual than the usual more modern offerings.

I also agree with the statement that I would expect PH to be a bit more liberal as at the end of the day, we are all here because we like cars. Whether it's a Toyota Yaris we own or Ferrari 599, we all share a common interest.

When I used to drive an old SAbb 900 convertible people seemed to treat me a lot more 'kindly' at junctions etc. They also seemed somewhat amazed that someone was prepared to drive an old convertible with the roof down on the motorway in midwinter.....what they did not know was the heater produced enough centigrades to roast a chicken. I miss it (the Saab that is)..

definately not treated the same in the BM... Mind you, I don't drive it the same either. I was a complete loon in the Saab.

Apologies to [TW]Fox, my excuse is that it's early and I don't know what I'm doing...

I like BMWs, think they make really good cars. The problem lies with a large proportion of the drivers.

For example a good mate of mine has a 330ci. Nice car, but he doesn't care about anything other than the fact it's a BMW. In fact his missus made him buy it. First time he took me out I asked him if he'd tried turning off the traction control, response was 'what's traction control?' I gave up after that point.

I think some BMW's as drivers cars are fantastic bits of kit, The issue lies with people who buy them because they think they are status symbol, they're not, and haven't been since the 80s along with Porsche (incidently, this is the period in my eyes where both manufacturers were knocking out the most interesting cars)...........IMHO of course smile
