Hi,

Just wondering whether an autolign inspection (or is there any similar company?) which gets a Cat D removed from the HPI register will then return the car to Full market value? Or does a car always have a 25% lower market value as it was a Cat D?

Ta

AFAIK a car can not be removed from the HPI register, but it can be added to the "condition inspected" register. An HPI search will still show the car as having a total loss claim however.

Interesting. The Autolign website suggests that the vehicle will be removed from the HPI register within three days of being approved. Actually, you're quite right, I've just read it and it says it will be removed from the Condition Alert register.

So then it will come up on the HPI as simply saying VRM Recorded as a repiared Insurance "total loss" - so still clear enough it was a Cat D and therefore wouldn't increase the value??!

BUT, I've spoken to HPI who say an all clear on the Autolign WILL return the car to market value?!?!

Indeed, I most certainly wouldn't either, and I find it doubtful that many people would if a car had been written off and repaired.

That's why I asked the question on here, just wondered if anyone else felt they'd pay a fair market price for a car which had been Cat D'd but then repaired, inspected and approved by HPI...

I still don't think I would, it's still damaged goods at the end of the day, whilst I know that a repair can make the car as good as new, I wouldn't be happy.

Having been through this recently with the sale of my Cat D caterham, I can confirm that the autolign inspection puts it on the HPI condition inspected register. It makes it much more sellable which will almost certainly result in a higher price, it will not return it to full market value.

Someone who does an HPI check will not be convinced of it being as good as a non-catd car.
If someone doesn't do an HPI check, if you don't tell them it's catd (and they dont ask) it's ok anyway.

Strangely a 1997 cat d (2000) caterham with a chassis being repaired/renewed by arch and being put together with proper parts should be worth more! Mine had a photo record of the build and it was like new when done!

I had an arse of a time selling it though. I even had people put the phone down on me when I told them!

Over time I tried...
not telling prospective buyers (a disaster)
not telling prospective buyers until they had seen/test driven but before they HPI'd it (a disaster)
telling prospective buyers up front (a disaster).

PS autolign are the only people who do the inspection - it's about £200 and ok value - it allowed me to sell my car after all!

Ta for that. So, whereas a CAT D write off will be worth say 2/3rds of the fair market value, what sorta % do you believe an autolign inspected car would be !?!?

I can certainly appreciate that it will be hard to sell on as well, I can't imagine many people being too happy with it.

Finance companies will not finance an inspected vehicle, so the Trade will still take your pants down and play with your chocolate starfish!!!

HPI are talking rubbish!

That is also very interesting and certainly would be a concern with selling on, but it will/would be bought with cash.

It seems a Cat D is an awful lot of bother, yet clearly plenty of people buy them!

Buying cat D or C is fine. Buying inspected is fine but don't ever expect to get full retail! It is difficult enough to get full retail for a perfect car.

Yes, I bought mine as I know Caterhams, saw the photo-record of the rebuild and knew of the car's more recent history. I got a good price but not as good as the guy who bought it from me. I'm not too unhappy as the car did me very well indeed. Selling it was a real PITA though! I reckon that inspecting it adds a few percentage points to the value, not much more.

My civic type r has just been inspected by autolign. Forgetting about the goal of getting it removed from the register, I'm glad I did it because it pointed out a couple of things which needed re-doing (The original repairers who repaired the car before I bought it had done a good job in general, but cut a couple of corners. Nothing shocking, but needed doing all the same) I wouldnt have known how to notice myself. I've had all the bits pointed out perfected, and its re-tested and passed now, so as stated here, will be moved from condition alert section of any report to condition inspected. Im glad I did it because it was a thorough inspection and I can have peace of mind regarding safety, as my wife mainly drives the car. I'll deal with the distrusting looks of buyers when the day comes to sell :|
