Hope the police catch the scum and you get your car back.

Hey guys,
Was going through some old posts and thought some of you might want to know what happened to my 1979 manual 928, pictured above, which was stolen from outside my flat in Maida Vale last year.
The car was eventually recovered less than a mile from my house, parked at the side of the road. Thankfully it had not been crashed and there was no cosmetic damage. I had her recovered to Paul Anderson's workshop at Stroud where he confirmed the engine was toast (car driven with failed water pump - no compression).
My insurers were brilliant (Chubb through Asset Trust). Offered me a fair write-off valuation despite not having an agreed value on the car. Perhaps I should simply have taken the money; at the time our business was not generating much cash and I had about 6 months' savings left in the bank. But I couldn't stomach getting rid of her, there are very, very few manual early 928s left, I love the colour very much and she has £2k worth of Koni and Hypercoil suspension bought from the US when you could get $2 to the pound (and installed with my own hands).
So I negotiated a slightly lower price and kept title of the car, now a Cat D. I had Paul Anderson remove the engine and replace it with a very late 4.7 S2 engine (10.4:1 CR) which was good for 310bhp from the factory. We kept the original CIS injection and used an "S" intake and plenum. 310bhp is quite a step up from 240bhp so we also fitted 4-pot Brembo brakes from the 928S4 and S4 wishbones all round.
As the car will be used on track we also fitted an Ishihara-Johnson crank scraper and windage kit to help ameliorate the oiling issues which can affect the 928 on track. Finally the car required a new lock set - I kind of like the fact that the car now has the locks/ignition from Paul's HSCC title-winning racer
So £5k later I have run the car run in, a unique early 928 combining all the best bits of the 928 - early body shape and interior (Pascha), 4.7 litre screamer engine from the S2 (best 928 engine imho) and brakes and suspension from the S4. Best of all the car looks completely stock unless you spot the Brembos peeking through the teledials.
Next the car was sent to Richard Armstrong for a complete A/C rebuild and recommission including a brand new condensor from Porsche.
I've got a couple more niggles to sort out and then plan to take her on track in the near future.
Cheers,
Joel

I did a rebuild on my 928 at a time when values didn't make it sense to do so. I think it's a sign that these cars are getting collectable. More and more people are doing the same thing, and I think that's a sign of what a unique blend of attributes these cars have.
