RIP Honda S2000

Honda to cease production of its two-seater sports car

The long-lived Honda S2000 will be no more from next year, according to reports. The car was introduced in 1999 and although not to everyone’s tastes it has won over the hearts of many road testers.

Sadly a replacement for the high-revving two-seater sports car is in doubt as carmakers are scaling back on their niche products.

‘The S2000 is a sports car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts,’ said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ‘It raised the bar for all future roadsters, and it’s already considered a classic by many Honda fans.’

The S2000 was only supposed to be a limited edition to mark Honda’s birthday but survived for ten years. An estimated 110,000 S2000s have been sold worldwide and production is due to end in June 2009. Fingers crossed for a special run-out model…

Never knew they sold so few! 110,000 is not exactly a huge figure in terms of worldwide sales.

RIP S2000, one of the best roadsters ever made IMO.

lets hope for a return to the old brutal lightweight Type R for the final model. It's got softer over the years.

Generally great cars, i've owned one and didn't enjoy the high revving to extract the 'power'.

You still can. They've only stopped making new ones, not recalled them all for crushing.

Never been a fan of this car. Not really a fan of Honda's Vtec engines anyway.

Still, shame they're not replacing it with something new.

Exactly why my brother cancelled his order after having one on an extended test drive (as in, few days!)

Personally enjoy the Vtec, think it takes me back to being young and on a bike hehe

Story of the times I guess. Its a niche product with excellent engineering - its amazing that Honda managed to extract 128bhp/ltr from a road going engine that is tractable & is as per JD Power survays incredibly reliable.

I guess in the future it will be a smaller capacity engine producing the same bhp... with even higher revs...mmmm. And it will certainly be available with hybrid option.

hehe

Almost bought one, couldn't fit in it. Got a 350z which is an easier GT car, just not as focused on the twisties. Luckily not my only car.

No S2000, no NSX, no F1 - I guess Honda really do want to concentrate on just making boring cars for old folk! wink

I loved my S2000, I think when it first came out it was a real bargain roadster compared to Boxters and TT's, with 240bhp being very impressive at the time - sadly they've never increased the power in 10 years, which is why the rest of the competition have left them behind in the power stakes.

The revvy engine could be a real pain at times, but also an absolute pleasure at other times, and the gearshift is simply the best I've encountered - it's a sports car that needs to be properly driven to get the most out of it, and I think you find a lot of bikers owning them due to the similarity in character. Right, just off to my auto with huge amounts of torque redface

RIP S2K frown
