Just bought a monaro , but have problems
Discussion
Mine comes on when it feels like it, i have notices when sitting at traffic lights and the car is idling it start idling strangly. A kind of bumping noise coming from the engine, runs fine though. Want to get a code reader to get to the bottom of the check engine light, may be releated to the idle issue ? any thoughts
Generic CAN OBDII code readers should work but will only give you generic codes. Any GM specific codes might not be able to be read. A few blokes use Efilive v2 including myself which definately works 100% to read and reset without needing a laptop or anything silly.
If you are at the dyno day in a couple of weeks let me know and I can scan your codes

Hello , im new on this forum, i bought a 6.0 vxr monaro about a month ago. Yesterday the check engine light came on, i refuse to give any money to vauxhall if i can help it. I was looking on ebay and found fault code readers . which one works with the monaro ?
Thank You
Take it to a monaro specialist or monaro dealer and ask them to take a look.Thank You
Will be a load cheaper than replacing an engine if you keep driving, I guess its perhaps alternator or oil pressure issues.

Philip,
I know exactly what you mean, the rumbling. From deep down, it's like the car is turning over off axis, if you know what I mean. I believe (after having the same thoughts) it's due to the firing order on the LS1 blocks. I rambled on for months and months when I got the car, thinking it was firing badly, misfiring or just basically being unhappy in itself. I've spoked to the Vaux specialist at Darlingon, Roger at Monkfish and a local North East yank engine specialist and all have said the same thing "stop flapping, it's a trait of the LS1"
If it's the same issue as I felt, it start when the car is at it's lowest idle, just grumbling along on tick over. You feel it in your bum if you know what I mean.
Regards the check engine light, feck it. I've been sat in traffic and it's came on before, also once when having the car washed, another time sitting at 68mph in 6th on the A1.
Think of the warning light as a tiny little LCD dash based mother in law, it always pops up and make you feel uneasy, yet most of the time it does this for no reason. I would suggest you get it checked when near a dealer, but in no means go out of your way.
IF you car throws the "danger Will Robinson, danger" sign every time then get it checked, but other than that just ignore it like a red headed step child.

Tried the set and mode buttons, doesn't show any faults . did notice the water temp went up to 200 degree f before the fan came on . is this normal ?
thanks
Pretty much yes thanks

Like Jez says, likely O2 sensors. But best to scan anyway, may be related to your uneven idle.
I find the idle lumpy, with the car (Monaro 6.0) occasionally rocking on its springs. I also get check-engine popping up when the car is very hot on occasion, usually when starting a hot engine. Probably see this half a dozen times a year.
I've never seen anything on my scan tool and I'm not worried by it

I had this a few months after buying the car (LS2 four years ago) in the middle of winter and the engine temperature suddenly shot up in heavy traffic and the check engine warning came on. I pulled off immwediately and looked under the bonnet. The bay was freezing and the rad and engine was coldish and so I waited for the temp to fall which it did very quickly. When I started up after 5 minutes everything was fine. Picadors checked it over and could not find anything wrong - water level ok etc. I have not had it since
I used the car today and found , when you start and drive the car for any length of time and stop (keeping the engine switch on) it ticks over fine, then switch engine off. If i went back out in 10mins and started it , it would tickover very rough. Today I tried starting the car with a little throttle on and it made it 10 times worse. Im no expert but im wondering if it something to do with the throttle position , any ideas,
Thanks for the help everyone

Boostedls1 , where are those items located ?
Thanks Phil
Thanks Phil
No such items fitted to the 6.0VXR. It has a fly by wire throttle.
You really need to get the code read somewhere in order to understand the issue. Anything else is just clutching at straws.

Hi and welcome, I am using efilive and I'd like to help here, but fear I am too far away. Any V2 guys on here who could have a look for him - Berks area?
Failing that, don't refuse to give VX some money, it could end up costing you a hell of a lot more. You could also try Monkfish or Walkinshaws, shouldn't cost much just to hook up a scanner and find out what's going on.
