Without a shadow of a doubt -- Lenny Henry.
Yes he was a "break thru" guy years ago because he was a young black kid that did impressions etc. Now his act is, black black black black............
I found him really funny right up until he did 'Chef', where he appeared to try to reinvent himself as some sort of pseudo-intellectual to compete with the Newman & Baddiel era of 'posh' alternative comedy. Seemed to totally disappear up his own arse at that point.

Apart from those who think Al Murray is a real character and a reflection of their lives, I think Stewart Lee is up there.

Well, possibly, except some of us are sooo old we've seen the up and comers become has beens and it colours our opinions. Can't speak for all, but age does do odd things to our tastes and outlook.

I imagine any comic who works long enough, with lots of exposure, is going to become stale at best. For them though, there's a whole new generation of consumers just coming along...

As a terrible generalisation, I find most American stand up comedians awfully irritating, although, it's probably their audiences that annoy me more with their constant whooping and caterwauling. Having said that, I could watch Bill Burr over and over and still laugh like a drain.

As for unfunny - Michael McIntrye is as funny as childhood leukemia. fk off.

I've seen Stewart Lee live three times this year, twice with his own touring show and once with him headlining a festival's comedy stage. The latter highlighted that he really needs a crowd that understands his humour and that his stage persona is not who he is in order for his act to work as he couldn't keep everybody with him during his set. He did a recent charity gig at the Royal Albert Hall and struggled because the crowd didn't suit him. Its the difference between Corbyn giving a speech at a Momentum rally vs. at the Tory party conference.

Stewart can and occasional can be bothered to do actual real jokes that are very funny, he just chooses not to, which in itself is quite funny and frustrating in equal measure. I'm still really looking forward to Stewart's new tour next year though.

I still like Richard Herring's comedy shows; his talk show on youtube can be quite interesting with the right guest as well. Richard has a best of tour starting shortly, well worth going to if you like bawdy comedy.

Back on topic, I can't stand Russell Brand, Jack Whitehall, Michael Mcintyre, James Corden, all guilty of lowest effort comedy going.

I also can't stand Jimmy Carr, I get that he is meant to be an ironic Jim Davidson but I can't shake that he has a fan base that privately takes his humour at face value.

Another Stewart to add to the Funny Comedians list: Stu Francis (the Canadian one, not ex-Crackerjack one)

I think Chef was the best thing he ever did. It was remarkably prescient, as many years later the TV schedules were full of ranty, walnut faced self important idiots who got incredibly upset about doing a bit of cooking. Lenny Henry seemed well ahead of the curve in that he parodied it before it became mainstream entertainment.

He can be awkward at times but I find him very funny. I can see why he might grate though.

I really like Daniel Tosh too. Can be pretty offensive to some delicate types though.

I liked Chef too but the third series turned it into a domestic drama (IIRC - I've never seen it repeated).

Christ, I thought you meant Michael McIntyre on first reading. I shall add this to my Watch list.

Slightly off topic, Steve Punt walked past me in the street at the weekend. Slightly unusual as I live in a small Welsh coastal village. It was most definitely him, and I said to my wife after he'd passed - "That was Hugh Dennis that was"..... two minutes later I realised my schoolboy error, and was so fking glad I hadn't stopped him and made a total of myself. hehe

I bought a ticket to see Bill Burr at the Hammersmith Apollo in August, then completely forgot it was on and missed it. frown

Roisin Conaty and Katherine Ryan, the latter has a cracking pair of norks, but far too smug.
