I clobbered a branch which was the size of a good tree on my way back last night, apart from smashing the windscreen and bending the bonnet it's dented the roof around the windscreen seal:

I've already sorted a bonnet replacement (pretty handy having a best friend who works for BMW if you drive one), but I'm after a bit of advice on what to do with the roof line before getting the screen replaced. I presume it won't seal terribly well how it is, and wondered if it could be reshaped without the need to have a new roof fitted. I'll give a few body shops a call on Monday, but would be interested in other people's opinions before I have to pull the trousers down.

I'm glad the screen held up well, getting covered in the small glass shards was a small price to pay for not having a branch in my face!

Errm, insurance? You know, that thing you take out every year that is normally money going down the drain?

With the roof and bonnet damage I'd say it's defo one for the insurance co. With the screen, bonnet, roof, grille, paint, bit of VAT, it'll probably be about 3.5k and I doubt you'd want to stump that. Sorry, stump was an unfortunate choice of word. It must have been very scary hitting a branch like that and the shattered windscreen shows the kind of impact. Yikes. Glad you're ok.

Insurance that carries a bit of a high excess, and trying to avoid adding a second fault claim as the first one will be one in a few months time.

I've sorted the lot for under the excess, a friend who runs his own body shop is doing the labour at a very good rate for me, and with pulling the roof out, adding a second hand bonnet, spraying the bonnet and sorting a scrape on the rear bumper plus the windscreen excess, wiper arms, grille etc puts the lot bang on the amount of the excess. Plus I get a friend to work on the car so I know it will be done properly not at an 'approved' body shop. Thanks for the reply anyway.

From the pictures, the roof looks like a fairly easy repair. When the screen comes out, get the roof done & then fit the new screen.
It may be worth getting a dent man to try and lift the dent out, it may be able to be "massaged" out without the need for paint.

Fair play fella and good luck with it. Second hand bonnet etc will help keep the costs down. I've just seen what stuff like that adds up to if every nut, bolt and panel is sourced, replaced, painted and the invoiced for with VAT. It is a little unhealthy! If you can get it done cheaply then more power to you smile
