Folks, does anyone know of an airgun dealer in this area (pref heading from Maidenhead towards Camberley type of route) that has a good stock of air rifles and is good for advice? I've found one place (sheephouse - are they any good there?) but was wondering if that was it? Alternatively somewhere around farnborough open past 6pm!

Dave

p.s. google also throws up AEClarke in blackwater but they are only open business hours which is when I'm in maidenhead!

Are they a shop per se or just a licenced dealer (if the latter then assume they would, for a charge, be able to receive a mail order air rifle?)

If that's all you're after, then any RFD (Registered Firearms Dealer) will do smile Sometimes there's a charge, sometimes not - depends on the dealer.

Forgot to add that Bisley is minutes from Farnborough as well - and they usually have a well stocked shop.

I've dealt with the guy at sheephouse on fishing and he seemed to be a fair bloke - didn't try to over-sell me anything and knew what he was talking about.

To be honest, no idea, I just did a google search and it pulled up three or four dealers, this one being Bracknell...

Pellpax get round the VCR act by delivering to your door if that helps

http://www.pellpax.co.uk/

Alternatively speak to Peter at Surrey Guns

http://www.surreyguns.com/

Also http://www.gtshooting.co.uk/ in Coulsdon or http://www.shootingstore.co.uk/acatalog/start.html in Caterham

You've also got a decent target club on your doorstep (asides from Bisley) http://www.maidenhead-target-shooting-club.org/

Hmmm, having perused the interweb and various airgun magazines I think I'm going to shop around a bit for a decent second hand jobby.

Any ideas what I'd get for 250-300 needs to have a decent (as in not pants) scope, silencer and ideally be multishot/co2 cart (though the latter may be a pipe dream at this price!)

Wonder what my circa 69/70 BSA .22 Airsporter is worth now?

I seem to recall it cost then about £35.00

There's good news, and average news. The average news is that you are some way from a decent (and I say decent) PCP budget. Steer clear of co2 as it's an accuracy nightmare that's you'll very soon regret.

The good news is that for that money, you can buy some of the very best spring rifles ever made, 2nd hand of course. My recommendations (as I own them both!) would be either the Weihrauch HW97k, or the HW 98. The 98 is lighter with less bounce, but aside from that they are very similar rifles. Being German, the will outlast you and the kids, and they are very accurate indeed. (5p's at 35 yards accurate)

In the interests of fair play, I'll also suggest the Air Arms TX200 which is very similar to the 97k, but I always prefer German weapons to be honest smile Steer clear of anything British that's not Air Arms, as they are not once they once were. (and they weren't all that even then)

Have a look at the airgunbbs if you get a chance smile

"Cheapest but still good"

Weihrauch HW100. Simple! It's one of the very best out there without delving into the £1000 realms of higher end Daystates, Steyr's etc. For that you are looking at £700 for the rifle, £150 for scope and mounts (let's say an MTC fixed mag Viper) and then £200 for a 12L bottle and filling kit. Done smile That would be an outfit that you could use for pretty much anything aside from FT (the scope won't cut it, but the rifle could)

Actually (and I can't believe I'm saying this) if you are determined to go PCP, then any of the cheaper Air Arms stuff is really quite good. Grab a copy of 'Air Gunner' or similar and see what takes your fancy - then head over to the airgunbbs sales section.

last night bought a BSA Ultra Multi shot with Tatical stock inc Hawke HD IR Mil dot scope/mounts and extended silencer

Havent had a play yet, but no doubt will tonight.. have used similar and has an effective killing range on rabbits of around 70-75yds

Will get pics up asap

ETA - Cost was around £475 for rifle, £45 for scope and mounts, £25 for silencer and £150 for pump - was going to go for divers bottle but decided a pump would be good enough and you get around 30-40 shots between charges any how

There have been a few HW100's go on airgunbbs for ~500 quid recently. £300 will get an ok-ish S410 or a reasonable S400 with scope. Problem with the OP's budget is it doesn't cover any filling kit.

Firstly, you WILL be buying a bottle, trust me smile

Secondly, you must be a pretty good shot to be going for rabbits at 75 yards smile For that range I'd prefer .17HMR or maybe .22LR to be absolutely sure. And, that's with arguably the most accurate 'field' rifle in the game hehe I take it you are using .177 at that range (for which you need to be REALLY good to get clean, headshot kills) as .22 would be like lobbing a 155mm howitzer, the trajectory would be all over the place...

Can I suggest you add a rangefinder to your next shopping trip smile

well i hit 4 out of 9 rabbits with the same gun/scope/silencer combo last week hence buying the gun biggrin all around 70-75yds away, all clean kills smile

have a small, hand held rangefinder so not sure if i need to buy anything extra TBH

ETA - yeah it is a .177

why will i be buying a bottle (not meaning to sound rude there at all)

Re filling kit, yes.... managed to miss that one! How many shots do you get per fill? and is it wholly impractical to get refills done at the shop or must you have a pump or bottle?
