On my way home (from having purchased a new CH thermostat), I was flashed by a "panda" (those whose interests in beastiality are awakened by this should read no further). Thinking he wanted to overtake, I pulled in. He stopped behind me and got out. I hastily reviewed the status of the Jeep and decided that it was all legal. I had seen the car behind me for the past 1/2 mile (ever since I joined the road in front of him in fact), so I was aware of my speed.

I stayed in the Jeep and awaited his "pleasure". The bobby was barely out of school.

"Please get out of the vehicle, Sir." he asked.

"Why?" asked I.

"Please get out of the vehicle, Sir." he repeated.

"You tell me why, and I'll consider it." I responded.

"Get out of the vehicle or I'll arrest you!" was his retort.

I got out and we walked to the front of the Jeep.

"Name?" he demanded.

"First, you tell me why you have stopped me, constable NNN." I replied.

"Name?" he again demanded.

"OK. As you won't inform me as to why you have stopped me, I will tell you that I am the Registered Keeper of this vehicle. You can ask PNC for a vehicle check and then you'll know my name, constable NNN. However, to save you having to walk back to your car, I will tell you my name if you tell me why you have stopped me."

"OK. Do you know the speed limit on this road, Sir?" he enquired.

"Yes. It's the National Speed Limit for a single carriageway."

"Yes, Sir. Fifty miles per hour!"

"Er, no!" said I, "It's 60 for this vehicle! And that is what I was doing."

"No, Sir! The speed limit on a single carriageway is 50!"

"Constable NNN, I suggest we both walk back to your car and I'll wait while you contact Control and ask a more experienced officer what the NSL is on a single carriageway."

We walked back to his panda and he radioed the question in.

"It's 60 you prat!" was the response.

He reddened and apologised to me.

I'm still debating whether to send a letter to force HQ, but I'll probably save my time and the stamp.

What a plonker!

I don't see much to debate here, get writing.

If you were not so sure of your ground a ticket would have been unfairly issued. There maybe a number of new officers out there, issuing tickets who don't have a bloody clue. You owe it to them to bend the chief constables ear, so that they recieve adequate training and no longer bring ridicule on the profession.

had exactly the same thing a few years ago.
driving on a dual carrageway see a Police car join on slip road behind me.
Me doing 70.Get pulled.

they took me into the back of their car and told me I was speeding and started giving me a lecture. I pointed out that the speed limit was 70. They dissagreed.

I asked if they had a copy of the highway code. one of them went to reach into the glove compartment when suddenly he stopped.
Then said concider this a warning to be more careful and that was that.

the amount of people who don't know the national speed limits is stagering. I have had this argument many times with various poeple just didnt expect it with teh police.

damn right, how many times have I been following some retard who jumps on the anchors and slows to 50 past a NSL scamera, could this be the explanation for all these 45mph convoys clogging up the roads?

What? That's insane......

....better than the guy who stopped me for 'sounding fast'.

(I suspect he'd done a plate check, the car was 200 miles from home, and so wanted an excuse to stop it and check it out).

don't tell the w@nkers anything that you don't have to tell them under the RTA (1988). Anything else they want to know, get them to arrest you. You're then covered by PACE. They probably won't touch you unless they want a load of paperwork and a wrongful arrest charge. If they're difficult/awkward with you - do likewise to them. It is not hard to be civil to somebody.

If it's a sensible copper they will have a sensible/pleasant attitude. If not, f"ck them.

Think I met his dad in my mis-spent youth.

Battery went flat and had to get to work, so risked the dodgy old Mini Cooper for a day.

Footbound plod jumped out, stopped me and cautioned me that I don't have to say anything, blah, blah, but my front number plate's illegal 'cos it's not vertical.

Inspected docs and sent me on my way, suitably chastised and reported.

Good job he didn't spot the three bald tyres, duff horn, duff handbrake and exhaust split before the box. Sounded like a tank.

Think he was deaf and blind.

Looked a bit like Brunstrom, come to think of it..............

I appear (from time to time) as an expert witness in my field and (from time to time) have dealings with the BiB in the course of my business, so I know what I can and cannot do.

However, regardless of PACE, recent legislation enabling the "detention" of citizens has been abused by some officers (generally at Inspector rank and above) and one can feel uneasy at the powers apparently granted to the BiB by our beloved () Home Secretary.

So now you can be arrested for not getting out of your car when told to do so by a uniformed officer?

I used to watch those "police action camera" type programmes until I got depressed by them (and after a while they're all the same anyway). You can put people's lives at risk, smash up other people's cars, cause dozens of police to waste their time on you, and you get a caution or conditional discharge. But don't you dare refuse to get out of your car when you've been caught.....(whisper it) speeding (shock, horror) or not, in this case.

Tony - I appreciate that, and had been a road safety issue I would have complied. As it was (and I did't say this earlier, I had pulled off the road. Anyway, all it would have needed was a, "Please get out so we can talk safely." request - S
