It was Russian.
It was nuclear tipped.
It was powered by liquid fuel.
It was piloted by a specially trained gibbon?

And unguided - with the blast radius of a nuclear warhead it didn't need to be particularly accurate

And supposed to detonate 6-8 seconds after launch... ...which would have been fun for the launching aircraft.

In service until the mid 1980s.

So how many F-89D Scorpion interceptors would it take to shoot down an unmanned WW2 Hellcat ?

https://www.warhistoryonline.com/instant-articles/...

( article contains pics of the aircraft for the pedants wink )
I presume these were the unguided small rockets that the Scorpion fired from its wingtip pods?
To be fair, they were designed to be fired in salvos at Soviet bomber formations rather than individual fighters.
There's a bit more information (and pictures of pieces of the crashed Hellcat from the 90s) on http://www.thexhunters.com/ which is a brilliant little site that hasn't been updated in 7 years and is a pig to navigate/link to! To get to the page about this plane you need to X-Peditions then F6F-5K.

There was a photo' on 216 Sqn in the late 80s that they didn't show too many people of a Timmy plugged into the back of a New Zealand A4 Skyhawk.

However steep it looks I assume the C-130s maintained a constant 1g through the turns to avoid upsetting the tea and biscuits.

Actually a wee bit less, those are ballistic flightpaths so as to stay within the a/c handling limits. whistle

If you think about it, more G would upset the 'tea and biscuits' less. The tea would be more likely to remain in the cup, the biscuits on the plate...

Anyway, what sort of Steeley-Eyed member of the 'Twin-Winged Master Race' drinks tea ffs?

We're not bloody Pongoes you know! tongue out
