I've spotted a couple examples of the unloved Daewoo/Chevrolet Kalos (now called Aveo) on offer at giveaway prices. Being a cheapskate, I'm tempted to pick one up but will I come to regret it? Will all the money I save have to be spent on paper bags to wear over my head so nobody I know will recognise me driving this thing?

I really haven't noticed many of these about. How common are they? Am I crazy to even consider it?

So, how bad can it be?

Well, I assume from the total lack of respones to my query that the Kalos isn't even interesting enough to slag off as a substandard piece of mediocrity. Maybe that means I don't have to worry about being embarrased to be seen in it, since nobody will notice it anyway?

Hmmmmm......decisions, decisions!

The new Aveo is terrible. Rubbish in every way. The Kalos is worse in every way.

An older Corsa would be much preferable for the money and easier and cheaper to get parts for/fix.

For the same cash buy a slightly older big brand car and you wont be making a mistake. Cheap car built down to a low price and they really arent good at all.

How much you looking at spending?

Terrible.
Mate of mine had one and it was a good job he had a warrenty, put it that way - it was in the workshop more than it was on the road, engine had valve problems, valve spring problems, bottom end bearings spun 3 months later, AFM shortly after that, snapped springs when it was a year old...

You could forgive it if was decent, but it was cheap and tacky inside and stuck to the road like a greased weasel, about the only redeeming feature was the engine was half decent - when it wasn't falling in pieces from the sky.

The engines are ex-Vauxhall engines from the Cavalier era. So, that's probably why the engines are decent enough. The rest of the car is tripe.

Even the new Cruze is a pile of pants - uses the 1.8VVT out of the Vectra/Insignia, but the rest of the car is ste.

Shockngly bad. Honestly.

Gutless engine, shockingly bad interior and the resale appeal of a used condom.

Had one for two weeks as a courtesy car...... it was NOT a courtesy to drive it... horrible badly built pile of cack....

I would much rather by a £1500 1998ish polo 1.4 ... atleast that will withstand a big crash, handle better and not be so crap to drive that you fall asleep or die of boredom...

I dont understand why anyone would ever by one new.... a second hand (anything else) would be much better

Considering a Kalos ? Madman, you are mad, man.
It seems I must be! Thanks to everyone for the input. I will stay as far away from these as possible!
