has anyone ever read/seen/chetted to someone about etc a duratec engined mx5? it seems to make some sense given that the 'tec has a mazda-fit bellhousing (or rather a mazda bell housing fits to it).. but just wondering if the duratec is too big/heavy etc.

oh and on duratecs - was the st170 a duratec or a zetec?

Some wiki'ing suggests that the Duratec is infact to a large extent the Mazda MZR engine as fitted to the current MX-5 in 2.0L and 1.8L formats.

The ST170 is not a Duratec, it is only 'badged' as such. It's actually an iron block Zetec with variable valve timing added.

The current generation MX-5 engine is indeed to a large extent a Duratec, to the point where the Duratec is (I believe) the first 'Ford' engine to depart from a bellhousing bolt pattern that Ford used for a number of years, instead using the standard Mazda pattern.

ETA - Also the Duratec engine is an Alloy block, so is quite light. I wouldn't be surprised if it's considerably lighter than the original MX-5 engine, although it may be larger in size

I thought that might be the case, although at least it works in a rwd layout and that there is a transmission ready to go. the Duratec is the first 'ford' engine not to have their standard bell-housing bolt pattern that allows use of legacy ford rwd gearboxes - this is because of its Mazda origins.

2 minutes that was all smile

The Mk3 MX5 hasn't got anything in common with the Mk1 / 2.

So you may as well fit a V6, V8, Rotary etc as they don't simply 'bolt in' either.
