Can anyone tell me 'typical' insurance cost by car group? I don't even know what car it'll be for, as the insurance cost is part of the decision.

It doesn't need to be for my area, or my age group. I'd just be interested to see difference costs for different insurance groups. i.e What's the % difference in cost between group 14 and group 20 cars for someone over 30 with a clean licence, in a relatively crime-free town?

Thanks.

No, I imagine someone has sat through hours of tedium getting online quotes for many different cars. As I said, I don't care about the exact values, I just want to understand how IG affects the cost of comp insurance for a middle-aged individual.

Car group is only one of a massive list of factors considered against a risk, it cannot be considered in isolation..

Unfortunately it really doesn't work like that, would make life easier if it did but it doesn't. Every insurance company will have it's own idea how each group works and each one will have it's own price point. It really would be easier to ask how long is a piece of string.

A valid point,, some insurers use 1-20, some 1-40, some 1-100 and some are totally different..

But I don't want to know about string, otherwise this would be on Stringheads.

Somebody on PH has either got quotes on five or so different cars from the same insurance company, or works in insurance and can give an idea of comparitive prices.

Even if they did they wouldn't be the same for you.

You can't work out any kind of pattern, or else there would be some website that did it!

May be a bit obvious - why not just plug your info into Gocompare and then try changing the car as often as you want to get all of the figures?

Then you could post back here with the figures and percentages and make the thread useful for the future.

I didn't ask for quotes for me, I asked for quotes for any middle-aged individual.

How about we skip all the "it can't be done" answers?

ok, my dad is a middle aged man, he pays £300 for his group 8 car, his previous car (group 3) was £300

Now how does that help?

by this logic all insurance for a middle aged man is £300.

You could always just run a bunch of quotes on aggregator sites, changing only the vehicle each time.. (grab some VRMs and hit confused.com)

Thats the problem....different cars....different kettle of fish
If one make of car has been crashed more it will be more expensive, so you could have 2 group 15 cars with wildly different quotes

This is your answer.

There is no super secret baseline for each individual group, each company uses it's own standard. The baseline itself may even be something as stupid as £20 a group and then when you add all the other risk facts that get used (ie Job, address, past history, inside leg measurement etc etc etc) you then start getting close to the actual price before insurance tax and other factors (ie mark up) are added.

Even for a middle age individual they would be different.

We can't skip the "it can't be done" because it can't be done rolleyes, we arn't being awkward just for the fun of it.
This thread started 25 minutes ago you could have easily gone on a comparison site and run at least 5 quotes for different cars in that time.

Some quotes I'm getting.

Group 1, 850, group 2, 1000, group 3 1400, roughly. Bad area, 2 small claims 3 years ago, no points, 25 years old. A good area halves that.
