Afternoon All,

On Monday evening my gf's cat was run over by a car, the cat died in my gf's arms about 15mins later.
It was about 15yds from here home.
The driver stopped to check his car & was about to drive off when a couple following him told him he should realy go knocking on doors seeing as the cat probably came from the street next to where it happened (which it did).
He said to them, pfft it was in the road, got in his car & drove off.
The couple were good enough to come knocking on my gf's door to give her the bad news.
Obviously she was devastated, later that evening we buried the car at the bottom of the garden.
Now i know accidents happen, the cat could of run out at the last second, he might not have seen her etc.
I suspect he was probably either driving too fast to stop in time or was occupied by something else as it's a very slow, extremely good visibilty part of the road.
What i'm pretty peeved about is how the driver had a total dis-regard for the cat & how it might affect other people & the fact he did'nt have the decency to stop & apologise.
The couple following gave us a partial reg & the make & colour of the car & a brief description of the guy.
I'm not going to go & dish out VBRJ as it's not going to help us bring the cat back but i'd just like to contact him & ask him why he felt it fit not to bother apologising and driving off.
I would send him an angry email but i don't have his phone number & i know some of you will say it's only a cat etc but it bothers me as i'd be beside myself if i knocked over someones pet!
Is there anyway to trace a car from a partial reg if your not plod?

How about leaving a nasty note under every car that matches the description?

I understand your pain, my cat got hit and was found by some people returning from the pub. The driver didn't stopped and inform us. But I fail to see what calling him and asking what he was doing is going to do?

I don't really know, maybe i need to vent my enger at him for being such an inconsiderate even when asked by 2 people to go & knock on the door.
He knocked the cats tag off which had the house number & name on it so it was pure ignorance as it lay in the road.
I guess i just want an apology from him really.

Fair dos. Like I say, someone hit my cat and didn't have the decency to stop and phone me up.

Short answer = no.

Without access to controlled systems such as those available to the plod, there's no way to track a car from its full registration - never mind a partial one.

If I remember correctly, you don't have to report hitting a cat, but you do for a dog.

Mmm, that's a lovely thing to do to the overwhelming majority of people whose cars match the description and weren't the person who ran over the cat, isn't it?

Are you not familiar with the lounge?

Yeah appparently you don't.
I don't want to get the guy shopped or anything like that or beat him to a bloody pulp i just thought it was terribly inconsiderate considering there was a tag, which he left behind, someone asked him to phone the number on it, he did it almost outside the gf's front door & he knew he did it as he got out to check his car was ok & 2 people told him.
I suppose the only other way is to hope i see him again around that way which is slim!
Oh well never mind, worth a punt!

The problem is how many doors would you expect him to knock on?

A cat could be quite away from it's home when it got knocked down.

Theres only 8 houses on the road...
He could of phoned as it had my gf's surname on the tag & her home phone number, so it wouldnt of takena great deal of effort.
The coupe behind picked the tag up after he drove off & called us.

TBH, and I'm not trying to create an argument here, I can understand why someone wouldn't stop. In this day and age, you're just as likely to get punched if you turn up at someone's front door with a dead cat in your arms and admission that you'd just run them over.

Whilst it's undoubtedly upsetting, I suggest you mourn the cat and move on.

This was exactly what I thought. Knock on door, little girl answers, show mangled cat to now screaming little girl, get beaten to a pulp by enraged father.

I didn't ask you for a review of my lines, did I? I was merely pointing out that is about the only way he'll get a message across.

Now, you've just come into the topic and said nothing worth while, so why not walk out the way you came, eh?

I'd agree with this, my cat was run over & killed by a car, driver didn't stop (no legal obligation) it's a sad moment, neighbours knocked the door to tell me. But at the end of the day cat ran out in front of car.

Sorry for your girlfriends loss but personally I would just try and put it behind you and you are only going to wind yourself up and make yourself feel worse. You have a very slim chance of finding the right person and even if you did, he didn't care when he knocked it over so why will he be just because you knock on his door?

It's not going to have a happy ending or change what has already been done.

Leave it a month or so and then surprise her with a fluffy kitten smile

Just get over it OP, having a go at the bloke over the phone wont achieve anything, neither will trying to ask him politely why he did it. Accidents happen and few people are nice.

FWIW if the cat were still alive I'd try and find the owner for some hope of saving it, despite the risk of abuse or some misguided attempt at remuneration for vets bills, but if it were already dead I'd probably carry on.

You're upset. It sucks that things die.

But be realistic. Imagine you're just sat in your house and hear a knock at the door. "Hi, erm... Do you own a cat? Cos I just killed one and wondered if it was yours?"

Now if you own a cat, you st yourself, barge the guy out of the way, run outside and find the mangled corpse of someone else's cat. What happens?

It sucks that the guy didn't call if there was a tag lying around, but seriously? You're going to ring him and say "You're ever so mean!" and he'll say "Who the fk cares, jog on" and slam the phone down.

I'm not condoning what the guy did as it was a thoroughly dickless selfish thing to do, but any form of retribution will be pointless. You won't change someone who is that heartless.
