Any day soon Brussels will decide that ABS will be mandatory on all bikes over 125cc built after 2017.
Today ticking the box for optional ABS costs around £400. The mathematics of manufacturing in higher volumes will probably bring that cost down considerably, let's say to £150. So if you were buying a big touring bike like a Triumph Sprint ST today and ABS was only an extra £150 would you have it? I would.
The worrying thing is that this could be the tip of the iceberg. Next up? Why not traction control, then crash bars, airbags and more?
Biking is about freedom: freedom to choose to take a form of transport that is always going to involve more risk than other types. One day governments will decide that bikes would be a lot safer if they had a few more wheels on them...
