The residents of Swindon are firmly backing council proposals to scrap speed cameras in the town, with 60 percent in favour of the plan according to a local newspaper poll. A decision will be taken on the measures at a council meeting scheduled for this evening.
The Swindon Advertiser asked more than 1,000 residents for their views online and in a ‘vox pop’ on the streets. Online 320 respondents wanted to scrap cameras with just 75 against, but on the street reporters found that 356 sided with the council while 407 were opposed to the move.
Swindon currently spends £400,000 a year supporting the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership but could pull out if it believes the money could be better spent on measures like traffic calming schemes and better road layout and design.
Whatever the Council decides in Swindon could have a major impact on camera funding elsewhere as politicians finally start to feel the groundswell of public opinion turning against the schemes.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed – and guessing the PH forums will be buzzing tomorrow whatever the outcome!
