The pinnacle of armoured vehicles that aren't engaged in battle situations has to be the American Presidential state car, aka 'The Beast'. Eight-inch armour plating, five-inch bullet proof glass, a hermetically sealed cabin and Kevlar reinforced run-flat tyres keep this unit on the move no matter the circumstances. The cost to build such a vehicle is $1.5 million. But what if you need armour protection but don't have that amount of cash? Unsurprisingly eBay has a few armoured cars on offer. An armoured BMW 745 is currently for sale for £74,999, and it's being discussed in the PH forum.
There are multiple protection levels for armoured vehicles ranging from B1 to B7; the lower end of the scale won't really stop weapons larger than a 9mm pistol. B4 is when armour gets a little stronger, able to withstand fire from a .44 Magnum in fact, while B6 and B7 (the BMW is classed as B6/7) can withstand a barrage of shots from armour piercing bullets. The need for an armoured vehicle must be quite rare in today's society and, if the owner feels their life is in danger, surely a new armoured car would be better suited?
