Historic Oval Racing Returns to Britain
Racing,
the style of which hasn't been seen since the famous Brooklands banked
track closed before the war, will once again be demonstrated in Britain
next year.
Rockingham Motor Speedway, Britain’s newest motor sports venue, has
announced the creation of a new joint venture with auctioneers and classic
car specialists Coys of Kensington, to create and promote historic
motorsport events.
The first result of the partnership will be the first-ever
International race meeting at the all-new venue at Corby in
Northamptonshire, on the Bank Holiday weekend of 26th, 27th and 28th May
2001.
The weekend will use both the banked 1.5-mile oval track and the
challenging combined road and oval course for events for both American and
European historic motorcycles, single seaters, saloons and sports cars
from each classic decade of the last century. The event will also include
a demonstration of the pre-war style of motor racing, last seen on a
banked track in Great Britain at Brooklands, which closed on the eve of
the Second World War.
“Although Rockingham is a brand-new, state of the art venue, we’re
very aware that we’re a part of Britain’s extensive motor racing
heritage” said Christopher Tate, Marketing Director of Rockingham
Motor Speedway.
“Our new venture with Coys of Kensington aligns us with the
acknowledged experts in the field of historic racing. The combination of
our joint resources will mean we can create some great events and great
spectacles, not just for the historic racing experts, but also for a whole
new generation of fans. We believe this event will rapidly become a key
fixture on the calendar.”
Coys of Kensington is a well known name in the world of classic
motoring, particularly in the auction market.
