You can't fault Bulgarian sports car maker Sin Cars for a lack of chutzpah, with the company saying the price of its R1 model has effectively doubled since it was first shown in 2013.
The original plan was to sell the R1 for around £72,000; but now the company says it has reengineered it to appeal more to 'gentleman drivers' and will now cost £145,000 for UK buyers. Given inflation is hovering close to negative territory, that's a fairly substantial increase.
"We don't want to make the car too popular," Sin's boss Rosen Daskalov told Autocar - a line we'll leave you to craft your own riposte to - "we are looking for the high-end people who want to be exclusive, and they want something that nobody else will have."
That exclusivity is guaranteed: Daskalov also said that plans to produce up to 120 cars a year have been scaled back to no more than 20. Sin is racing in the European GT4 championship and the first road-going R1 has already been delivered to a customer in France and apparently 10 more have been ordered. Apparently the revised R1 has lost the prototype's stripped-out interior and will feature handcrafted materials and parts, but sticks with the original plan to use Chevrolet-sourced V8 engines with outputs ranging from 444hp to a supercharged 641hp.
While Sin's decision to double its prices is an audacious one, the very fact the company is still around and seemingly intent on actually delivering cars means it's already doing far better than many other sportscar start-ups...
