The most expensive number plate '1' was sold for £14m and fitted to a car nowhere near its value. But from bricks and mortar to classic cars, people are seeking different ways to invest their money and 'cherished' numberplates seem a popular choice. You may have noticed more and more would seem to be worth a greater sum than the car they're on, a seemingly absurd situation on the face of it.
Can there be a good reason for doing so? One PHer's friend of a friend has a numberplate that was given to him when his father passed away. It may be worth considerably more than his car but he would rather enjoy the sentimental value of it. Another PHer reckons a valuable plate on a rust bucket is the perfect anti-snobbery and a treat to see.
Things are getting a little silly though - 'F 1' was bought for £440,000 in 2008 and currently not for sale but offers a sense of the desirability of two-character registrations - 'X 1' was listed for a million back in 2012.
Congratulations to PHer Alibream though - your first post in the forums is our Thread Of The Day and puts a new twist on a General Gassing favourite.
